Strong earthquake hits northern Sumatra An earthquake with a potential of triggering tsunami jolted Aceh around 1 p.m. on Sunday, stirring panic among residents. The quake, measuring 7.2 on Richter scale, shook the western coast of Aceh, with epicenter of the temblor located at 66 kilometers southwest of Meulaboh at a depth of 30 kilometers beneath the see floor, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

Eventually six dead and some heavy damage after earthquake The number of casualties of the earthquake that shook parts of northern Sumatra and Aceh yesterday, has risen to six. Three new victims were found in Sinabang, the district capital of Simeulue. The identity of these victims is not clear yet. One of the three victims has already been taken from the local hospital for burial earlier today. Still, dozens of victims are brought to the hospital for their injuries.

Strong 7.5-magnitude quake hits Western Sumatra A strong 7.5-magnitude quake struck Indonesia's Sumatra island on Wednesday, triggering mass panic here and sparking tsunami alerts locally and in Thailand, officials and residents said. There were no immediate reports of damage. The US Geological Survey said the undersea quake struck at 3:08 pm (0808 GMT) some 312 kilometres west-southwest of the North Sumatra capital Medan, at a depth of 34 kilometres.

6.1-magnitude quake strikes off coast of Sumatra A powerful undersea earthquake rocked a large swath of western Indonesia on Wednesday, the Hong Kong Observatory said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The tremor was centered off the island of Sumatra, 420 kilometers (260 miles) south-southeast of Banda Aceh, the observatory said. It struck just after 0130 am local time (1830 GMT Thursday).

The city of Gunung Sitoli, on Pulau Nias is almost flattened
The death toll from a powerful earthquake that devastated a remote Indonesian island rose to an estimated 1,000 Wednesday, according to Sumatra's governor, as rescuers searched frantically through collapsed buildings for survivors. Bodies were still being dug from ruins of houses and shops early Wednesday and laid out in front of churches and mosques.

Damaging wave hits Simeulue island A three-metre wave smashed into the Indonesian island of Simeulue, off the coast of Sumatra, causing extensive damage shortly after a massive earthquake, a military official said. Up to 2,000 people are believed to have died in the earthquake. The military commander in Aceh, close to the epicentre of the quake, says he has received reports that the wharf at Simeulue's main port was badly damaged.

35 Injured in Indonesian earthquake A massive earthquake with a magnitude up to 7.7 rocked parts of Indonesia's Sumatra island Saturday, injuring at least 35 people and damaging buildings. Seismologists in Singapore said there was a high risk of tsunami - powerful waves caused by seismic activity - in western Sumatra.
