A provincial law will come into effect on June 1, 2012, that will make enclosed building spaces off grounds to smoking, including hotels and nightspots. Bali governor confirms elimination of 110,000 dogs Bali governor Made Mangku Pastika confirmed via Kompas.com that 110,000 dogs have been eliminated thus far in the island's continuing drive to stem an outbreak of rabies." In the meantime, some 200,000 dogs have been vaccinated. The total number of dogs on the island is put at 540,000 animals," explained the governor in a meeting with the Bali House of Representatives (DPRD-Bali) on Tuesday, August 24, 2010.

Bali to provide free medical care for the poor in 2010 Bali's provincial government is preparing a budget of Rp. 250 billion (18 million euro) to pay for a free medical care program to be introduced in 2010. "Jaminan Kesehatan Bali Mandara" is the extension of a program launched in 2008 in 500 villages at a cost of Rp. 12 billion (800.000 euro) that covers the cost of medical examinations, treatment, surgical operations, outpatient care and hospitalization.

'No abolishment of capital punishment for drug offenses' The government strongly rejects any proposals to abolish capital punishment for drug offenses on the ground of respect for human rights as all forms of criminal actions are in fact violations of these rights, as was said by Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh. Saleh said this at the session of the Constitutional Court in Jakarta to hear several of the cases of drug offenders sentenced to death who had filed requests for a review of articles mandating the death sentence.

Luxury hotel evacuated after 'explosive' found Police on the Indonesian island of Bali evacuated a 5-star hotel on Wednesday after staff found a suspicious device, a senior officer said. Bali police chief Made Mangku Pastika said the device found at the Kuta Paradiso Hotel contained items two timers, powder, and a battery but no explosives. He called the incident a "terror attack" because it was designed to scare people.

Indonesia safe so far, except for Aceh As police tightened security across Indonesia amid fears of attacks by Islamic extremists over the festive season, there were no reports of sectarian violence or terrorist bombings on Christmas Eve, while Christmas Day has been peaceful so far. The only reports of major violence came from rebellious Aceh province, where the military said at least 14 people were killed over recent days.

Chief investigator Ins. Gen.
