3,500 police officers to be deployed at flood-hit areas The Police Headquarters will deploy 3,500 police officers at several areas in Indonesian that have been hit by floods, landslides, and volcano eruption. Pakistani sentenced to six years for smuggling people The district court in Pandeglang, Banten, sentenced a Pakistani national to six years in jail on Tuesday for trying to smuggle people to Australia. The court also ordered the Pakistani, Saadhat Ali (49), to pay a fine of Rp500 million or spend two more months in jail.

Six members of Ahmadiyah slaughtered in Banten During a fight between members of the - denounced by the Islamic Council of Scholars - Ahmadiyah and nearby residents of their temporary stay for the night, six people were killed. All of those killed are said to be members of Ahmadiyah. The fight broke out earlier today in the village of Umbulan, Pandeglang in Banten province in western Java.

Dozens of houses destroyed by high waves in Banten High waves that hit the beach of Carita, in the district of Pandeglang in the province of Banten, have destroyed dozens of houses which were built on the very edge of the beach. The high waves were not broken by the wave-breakers in place at the beach because the high water was already higher than the wave-breakers.

Seven killed in Magelang landslide At least seven people from the villages of Tanjungsari and Pasangsari, district Magelang, Central Java, were killed in a landslide Sunday. This was reported by the village head of Tanjungsari. Four others were wounded and three were still missing. Rescue workers have already evacuated the dead and wounded, and they were still looking for the three missing persons.

Indonesians welcome new year with relief Indonesians heaved a sigh of great relief as they welcomed New Year's Day, grateful that days of fears of bomb attacks proved unfounded. Instead, sounds from firecracker explosions and paper trumpets filled the air, marking the arrival of a new millennium. In Pekanbaru, however, people preferred a quiet celebration and no sounds of firecrackers were heard in the city that was hit by a bomb attack last Christmas Eve. Firecracker vendors quit their business following the deadly explosion at a church in the city last Sunday.
