President regrets slow official statement on prison riot President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyoho has expressed his regret at the slow official statement from both central and regional governments in relation to Tanjung Gusta prison riot in Medan, North Sumatra. The rioting in the over-capacity correctional institution on Thursday in Medan left five people dead and caused 240 inmates to escape.

"I wait for respond and reaction time from the central and regional government but it comes late. There is no official statement ten hours after riot occurs," President Yudhoyono said when opening a limited meeting at Halim Perdana Kusuma airport here on Saturday to discuss the handling of the riot, and the skyrocketing price of beef.

According to the president, the official statement was necessary because it could avoid an impression that the government was ignorant. Therefore, soon after arriving from West Nusa Tenggara for a working visit, the head of state immediately gathered a number of related ministers to discuss the matters.

On the occasion the president admired Law and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsuddin who had decided to leave for Medan to obtain first hand information about the incident.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said in a press conference here on Friday that the president had ordered an investigation into the rioting in the Tanjung Gusta prison.

"The President has ordered an in-depth investigation to establish the motive behind the rioting at the Tanjung Gusta correctional facility. National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo himself has appointed any of his officers to conduct the in-depth investigation," Djoko Suyanto said.

At a coordination meeting held earlier in the day to discuss the handling of the rioting case, the government decided to remove some of inmates to the closest prisons, he said.

"Because the prison is overcapacity, Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Denny Indrayana has been asked to remove some of the inmates to other correctional facilities," he said.

150 ships from 40 countries to take part in Sail Komodo 2013 Around 150 ships from 40 countries have been registered to participate in Sail Komodo 2013 which will be held in July-August.

"Up to Wednesday, 150 ships have been registered, and the number might increase further because every day there are always requests to participate in the event which will be held in East Nusa Tenggara," H.A. Haris of the local tourism office, said here on Wednesday.

The Sail Komodo registration for participation is open until participants will start sailing from Darwin, Australia on July 27, 2013, to Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara Province. If one ship carries five people on board, there will be around 750 people who will sail for one month during Sail Komodo.

He urged all stakeholders in East Nusa Tenggara to warmly welcome the participants and make them feel comfortable and safe when staying in the province.As part of annual Sail Indonesia activities, East Nusa Tenggara Province will host an international maritime event called Sail Komodo this year.

"Sail Komodo will make Komodo Island famous and help attract foreign as well as domestic tourists to visit the island," said Indonesian Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Agung Laksono when chairing a coordinating meeting on the implementation of Sail Komodo, in Jakarta on February 4, 2013.

Rokatenda eruption forces 2,675 people to take refuge Some 2,675 residents of Palue Island, Sikka and Ende Districts, East Nusa Tenggara Province, were forced to take refuge as Mount Rokatenda has erupted since Saturday evening.

Around 1,552 refugees are inhabitants of Sikka and the rest from Ende, Deputy District Head of Sikka Damianus Wera said here on Wednesday. They have taken refuge in Maumere, the capital of Sikka, and Maurole, Ende District.


Inhabitants of five villages on Palue Island, however, have refused to leave their villages despite the volcanic eruption. Food and clean water have been distributed to the refugees as well as villagers who have decided to stay in their homes.


Mt Rokatenda erupted on Saturday evening and spewed ash into the sky at a height of between 3.000-4.000 meters above the sea level. The volcanic ash fell as mud rains into four districts on Flores Island, namely Maumere, Ende, Nagekeo and Ngada. The emergency status of Mt Rokatenda eruption has been raised to alert status (level III).

5.6-magnitude quake jolts W. Nusa Tenggara A 5.6-magnitude earthquake shook West Nusa Tenggara province on Thursday, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The epicenter of the quake which struck at 06.04 p.m. was located 9.27 degrees southern latitude and 116.37 degree eastern longitude or some 60 km southeast of Central Lombok district at a depth of 77 km, the agency said.
