BNPB to install tsunami early warning sirens in Bengkulu The Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is to install six tsunami early warning sirens in six districts of Bengkulu, an official said. The sirens installment is a part of the tsunami shelter development program which will cost around Rp68 billion (6.8 million US dollar).

Boat carrying Sri Lankan immigrants stranded in Mukomuko A boat with 120 Sri Lankan immigrants on board was stranded at sea around four kilometers off Air Rami Sub District, Mukomuko, Bengkulu Province, on Thursday. The boat ran out of fuel while sailing toward Australia, Jhoni Adi, the secretary of the Air Rami rural administration, said here on Friday.

Floods affect over 180 houses in Mukomuko At least 180 houses were flooded in the Pondok Batu village of the Mukomuko District on Monday, following incessant heavy rains on Saturday and Sunday. A total of 210 families were affected by the floods, said Syahrinal, Pondok Batu's Village Chief, on Monday.

Strong quake strikes near Padang, West Sumatra Once again, residents in the city of Padang in West Sumatra province, have been scared out of their houses by a stron earthquake. A quake with a magnitude of 6.0 caused many residents to flea their houses in panic when the quake struck at 07:16 local time.

Two moderate earthquakes hit western Indonesia Two earthquakes measuring 5.5 and 5.6 respectively on the Richter scale rocked Sumatra and Java Islands in western Indonesia on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualty, Indonesian meteorology and disaster management agencies said.

No tsunami after heavy 7.3 Sumatra earthquake Indonesia lifted a tsunami alert issued after a powerful 7.2-magnitude quake struck off the west coast of Sumatra island on Monday, the geophysics and meteorological agency said. "The tsunami warning has ended after the 7.2-magnitude quake," the agency said in a text message.

Thousands homeless after earthquakes strike West Sumatra A number of earthquakes that struck the area west of Padang and Bengkulu in the last two days has caused at least ten deaths, two in the city of Bengkulu, five in Mukomuko district and three in North Bengkulu district. The death toll was lower than first feared after it became clear that the earthquakes were not as destructive on land as first thought. Also there was no tsunami, however there were tsunami-alerts issued three times during the series of earthquakes.
