Mandala Air to fly again from April 4, 2012 The Indonesian minister of Transportation has handed over the flight permissions, or air operator certificate AOC to the managers of Mandala Airlines. This just happened recently although the document was already signed on February 20, 2012. The airline will resume flights on April 4, starting with three Airbus 320 planes.

Tiger Airways buys stake in grounded Indonesian airline Singapore budget airline Tiger Airways has bought a 33 percent stake in grounded Indonesian carrier Mandala Airlines, the companies announced on Monday. Financial details were not immediately disclosed.

Mandala Airlines in the hands of Saratoga Group The Saratoga Group, an investment company founded by Edwin Soeryadjaya and Sandiaga Uno, has announced that is had acquired 51 percent of Mandala Airlines stock. The remaining shares are in the hands of Tiger Airways with 33 percent and 16 percent for the old shareholders and creditors of the airline.

Garuda Indonesia to recruit pilots Mandala Airlines Garuda Indonesia plans to recruit 180 new pilots in 2011, and as many as 36 pilots of whom are former pilots of the Mandala Airlines. "This year we are looking to recruit as many as 180 pilots, 36 pilots will come from Mandala Airlines," said Emirsyah, President Director of Garuda Indonesia, at the Indonesian Stock Exchange, Jakarta, Friday.

EU lifts travel ban for some Indonesian carriers The European Union (EU) has lifted its restriction on four Indonesian air carriers from entering its territory, Director of Air Transport of Indonesian Transport Ministry Herry Bakti quoted EU ambassador to Indonesia Julian Wilson as saying here on Tuesday. The four carriers are leading carrier Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines, Airfast Indonesia and Prime Air, Bakti said. All of them have potential to open routes to Europe, according to the ministry.

Garuda Indonesia likely allowed to fly to Europe soon The European Union will soon partially lift a blanket ban on Indonesian airlines, imposed in 2007 after a series of deadly air accidents, the Indonesian Transport Ministry said Saturday. The EU's Air Safety Committee has recommended that the bloc drop the ban on national carrier Garuda Indonesia and three other airlines which are deemed to have met EU's safety standards, said Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the ministry.

Moving? Yes, but not to the Netherlands After I wrote an article recently, some people thought that I was about to return to the Netherlands. Indeed I was in the Netherlands and indeed I was about to move. Whether I put these two facts in one article on purpose or not, it were two things that played an important role at that moment. Both of them have been rounded off properly though and it wasn't that hard after all.

Pilot returns plane to airport terminal over hard-headed caller A domestic flight yesterday was disrupted by a stupid incident. The plane eventually left one hour late because a passenger refused to turn off his mobile phone while in the plane. The plane only departed when the passenger was unloaded from the plane at Medan's Polonia airport.

Mandala Airlines places first A320 order from Indonesia Mandala Airlines has signed a contract for 25 A320s and has become the first customer for the type from Indonesia. The airline already holds the status of being the first Indonesian carrier to operate A320s following the entry into service of the first of two leased aircraft in December 2006. The new A320s will be used to replace old generation Boeing 737-200s on Mandala Airlines' widespread domestic network that extends to over 20 destinations. The A320s will be configured with 180 economy class seats.

Indonesia: age limit of acquired planes at 10 years The government is preparing new regulations that will limit the age of newly acquired planes to stimulate domestic operators to give priority to safety, an official announced earlier today. Domestic airliners will be banned from hiring or buying planes that do not meet this new requirement.

But at least 20 left Adam Air within months, citing concerns that poor maintenance, corruption and rule-bending could lead to a crash - charges the airline denied. Indonesia's crowded skies It's been four days since budget carrier Adam Air's Flight 574 disappeared over the Indonesian archipelago, and despite a search and rescue effort involving ships, planes and ground patrols, authorities are no closer to finding the wreckage or any possible survivors. The Boeing 737-400, which took off from Indonesia's main island of Java en route to the popular diving destination of Manado with 102 people on board, emitted a signal from its emergency beacon over the mountainous island of Sulawesi before dropping out of sight on New Year's Day.

Indonesia bans purchase of Boeing 737-200s The Indonesian government said Wednesday it banned local airliners from purchasing passenger plane Boeing 737-200s due to many serious accidents involving the type of aircraft. Cardig acquires Mandala Airlines from military Cargo transporter Cardig International has owned 100 percent of Indonesia's cash-strapped carrier Mandala Airlines under a purchase agreement earlier this month, an executive said Monday. Mandala president Diono Nurjadin told reporters here the negotiation began in September last year, several days after a Mandala plane crashed near an airport in the North Sumatra capital of Medan, killing 149 passengers and people on the ground.

North Sumatra to get new airport soon After repeated delays, the central government has renewed its promise to start the construction of Kuala Namu airport in Deli Serdang regency in September. The facility would replace North Sumatra's ailing Polonia airport in Medan. The promise was made by State Minister of National Development Planning Paskah Suzetta in Medan on Thursday after consulting with Transportation Minister Hatta Radjasa.

Airplane crash kills 141 in Indonesia An Indonesian jetliner crashed in a crowded residential neighborhood in the city of Medan shortly after takeoff Monday, killing 141 people, including 30 on the ground. Six passengers survived, officials said. The Mandala Airlines Boeing 737 was heading to Jakarta in overcast weather when it crashed seconds after takeoff, bursting into flames and sending thick clouds of black smoke high into the air.

Flights disrupted as haze worsens in Jambi Increasing smoke and haze from bush and forest fires in the past week around Jambi city have disrupted flights and led to respiratory problems among residents. M. Sidabutar, the head of Sultan Thaha Airport Management, said on Monday that the worsening haze had decreased pilot visibility so many flights in and out of Jambi had to be delayed. "We have informed Jakarta and other airports in order to delay flights to Jambi as the haze thickened this morning," said Sidabutar.

Haze stops 7 aircraft from landing at Pekanbaru airport Seven aircraft failed to land at the Sultan Syarief Airport on Tuesday due to the thick haze from forest and bushfires raging in Indonesia's Riau province. Airport chief Sutrisno said visibility increased to about 400 metres at 8am from 300 metres at 6am on Tuesday. As visibility was below the threshold, seven airplanes failed to land at the airport and one airplane failed to take off, he said.

Four local airlines to enter alliance amid competition Four airlines -- Mandala Airlines, Pelita Air Service, Bouraq Airlines, and Dirgantara Air Service -- will form an alliance next month to cope with mounting domestic competition, a senior airline executive said. Head of Mandala's development division Kus Winarko said on Wednesday that the alliance was the only way the airlines could provide new destinations without adding more planes.
