Trading XL for Simpati Something remarkable to me is the limited number of SMS messages or telephone calls that I received. That seems to be coincidence, but it isn't. Most people don't even know that I am pulang kampung, but the main reason is the simple fact that the network of my provider XL is not available for most time here. At some moments when the weather is good - so the wet season like now is an even worse time - I can barely send or receive an SMS here now. Making a telephone call is simply not possible.

The umbrella-kids near the bridge Yesterday in the late afternoon I was still in Jakarta. Not entirely according to my own planning, but those things are very hard to plan in this country, and even then there is not a real problem, because there is always another way to enjoy yourself and to get home as well.

Back in Yogya: crowds in the streets I moved from Yogya some five months ago now. I don't have any feeling that resembled homesickness, but it is not bad at all to be back here again for a few days. A few days back already I woke up when the bus had already left the area of Semarang, which meant that it was less than three hours traveling before the bus would drop us at one of the big intersections along the southern ring road of the city.

The mess at PLN Cikarang #3 Last contact with PLN dated back to July this year. Indeed I was not called back or did I receive information in any other way from them. So until that very moment I did not have a clue about what was going on and how I was able to pay for my monthly electrical bill.

The mess at PLN Cikarang #2 Early July, I headed for the local office of PLN in Lippo Cikarang, located almost besides the local post office, so that was not too difficult to find. I expected it to be a short visit, but that would turn out to be a completely different. My address was not found in the system of the cashier as well and I was not able to pay my bill here as well for the time being.

The mess at PLN Cikarang #1 However I can arrange most things here in Lippo Cikarang at the offices of their own company, there are always a few exceptions - unfortunately. In most cases those exceptions are government companies. The best example is the power supply in this area. Power here in Lippo Cikarang is also supplied by PLN.

No shortage of stupid cops Not the first time and most likely also not the last time that I was 'aught in a 'trap' when on the road. This means that all motorcyclists are stopped by police to check their paperwork. Drivers of motorcycles should always bring a valid STNK ('license plate registration') and SIM C ('driving license for motorcycles') with them.

Toll Soekarno-Hatta to Cikarang: +500 Rupiah However tariffs of toll roads throughout many parts of Java and parts of Sumatra and Sulawesi have indeed been increased late last month, price hikes are not as drastic as they were first portrayed. Most users will hardly have any increase at all, since tariffs for higher road classes were among those increased most. This means that an entire Indonesian family stuffed in one oversized SUV still pays almost nothing to use the toll roads.

Buka botol in B.A.T.S. It was a regular Friday night on which my girlfriend and I decided to go clubbing. Not that same night because that would mean we had to hurry to go out, something that is not really beneficial and something I don't want to do at all. So not tonight, but the next night, the malam minggu (the evening before Sunday, so Saturday night) we would go to Jakarta.

An old-fashioned Saturday night in Jogja It was an old-fashioned Saturday evening in Jogjakarta. A part of my life that I left behind for a new life a few hundred kilometers away. I didn't miss a thing about it in the last two months, but when I am 'submerged' in it once again, it is fairly easy to pick up the old rhythm again. That is exactly what I did, together with my girlfriend and a number of friends in town.

Back to Jogja as a tourist It has been two months ago that I left from Yogyakarta to move to my new house in Lippo Cikarang. Now everything has settled down - for some time already by the way - it is about time to go back to the city where I spent almost three years of my life. As I told before, I did not move from Yogyakarta because I had to, so returning is not a big problem for me.

Create your own international driver license Almost all of you travelers to Indonesia which have used a car or motorbike know that the police in general is quite corrupt and will do anything to get a few Rupiah's into their pockets when you are stopped for whatever reason. Money gone, but most will think that it doesn't really matter. That is true, because what is 20.000 Rupiah for not bringing your SIM (drivers license) in Yogyakarta or 50.000 Rupiah for not wearing your helmet in Jakarta?

Life in Jakarta back to normal after bombings It was just a short visit to Jakarta, just one night, but it took place after the first bombing in a number of years in Indonesia. Where media all want to talk about the results for Indonesia - as if the country is as small as Luxembourg or Brunei, and even that is still too big - locals seem to go on with their lives as they did before. While the area around the two hotels, J.W. Marriott and Ritz Carlton was still partly closed off, the rest of Jakarta looked like a Saturday morning when it was Saturday morning.

A trip by bus from Kampung Rambutan to Karangbawang At the end of a Sunday afternoon we left from Lippo Cikarang in the direction of Kampung Rambutan, a bus terminal at the edge of Jakarta. From here we would take the bus later today. We would take the one headed for Cilacap at the southern coast of Central Java to bring a visit to the family of my girlfriend. The trip to the bus terminal took about one hour, which was only a small leg in the entire trip.

Moving? Yes, but not to the Netherlands After I wrote an article recently, some people thought that I was about to return to the Netherlands. Indeed I was in the Netherlands and indeed I was about to move. Whether I put these two facts in one article on purpose or not, it were two things that played an important role at that moment. Both of them have been rounded off properly though and it wasn't that hard after all.

Indonesia Bisa! They stole my motorbike already It was just my second night in my new neighborhood of Lippo Cikarang when I woke up and found out that something was wrong. As I was preparing to go to Jakarta by bus - a one hour drive to Komdak bus shelter - I wanted to get my motorbike from the parking space which is fenced off with an iron fence. I wanted to get the key first, but no key at the place where it should be. And then; no motorbike there. Oops, what had gone wrong and where is the thing?

Indonesia Bisa! Thoughts on a Thursday morning It is just past eight in the morning local time when the tukang arrive. They were indirectly hired by me to take care of packing all my stuff. You can assume from me that it is quite a lot that has to be moved to Lippo Cikarang, my new living environment in a few days from here, so I am glad that there are some people helping me here.

Road accidents claim 14 lives At least 14 people died in road accident on Friday, as most Indonesian Muslims were preparing to observe the Idul Fitri holidays next week. Ten people were killed in a road accident in the East Java district of Paiton, while the other four died in another accident in South Lampung regency, Lampung province. Brig. Wayan, a police officer at the Paiton police subprecinct, said the tragic accident in Paiton began as a tanker truck was heading south west toward Surabaya, from Probolinggo regency in Friday morning.
