Thousands of visitors flock to Yogya beaches The second day of Lebaran, yesterday, has moved thousands of local tourists from different parts of Yogyakarta and surrounding areas to visit the beaches on the southern side of the province. The beaches of Depok and Parangtritis were flooded with tourists looking for a nice scenery and the fresh sea-food. There was even a shortage of parking space at certain moments.

Almost 300 flights from Jakarta delayed As much as 294 flights from the international airport of Soekarno-Hatta near Jakarta were more than half an hour late yesterday. The flights were domestic as well as international flights, told a staff member at a Lebaran information point at the airport. Most planes were delayed because of operational reasons, caused by delays elsewhere in the country earlier on the day.

More trains and higher prices during mudik PT. Kereta Api will put in service three extra trains to absorb the large number of passengers during mudik this year. The three extra trains will total a number of 30 wagons. The trains will be added to the normal train schedule on the island of Java and will all be ekonomi class trains.

Train tickets around Lebaran almost sold out However the holy month of fasting has not even started, most have already made plans to go home to celebrate the end of it. Yesterday all tickets for all classes in trains from Jakarta to various cities throughout Java were sold out. Tickets for departure five days before the end of the Ramadan were even sold out completely.

Garuda adds 44,000 seats for Idul Fitri holidays PT Garuda Indonesia is preparing 44,000 additional seat to handle the expected surge in demand expected over the Lebaran and Idul Fitri period of September 2008. The Head of Communications for GA. Pujobroto, has issued a press release stating that from September 25 - October 6, 2008 the airline will add 44,533 seats over 11 selected routes. The 11 routes to benefit from the increase in seats are comprised of 8 domestic routes and 3 international routes.

Beheaded girls were Ramadan 'trophies' Three Christian high school girls were beheaded as a Ramadan "trophy" by Indonesian militants who conceived the idea after a visit to Philippines jihadists, a court heard yesterday. The girls' severed heads were dumped in plastic bags in their village in Indonesia's strife-torn Central Sulawesi province, along with a handwritten note threatening more such attacks. Power line breaks, causes accident on Cipularang highway Traffic at the Cipularang toll road came to a grinding hold on Friday evening when a high-voltage power cable (Saluran Udara Tegangan Ekstra Tinggi, SUTET), which crossed the road here, broke of and came down in the Sadang area, district of Purwakarta. The cable just missed the cars on the road below. After the cable broke, several small accidents occured. Three cars were damaged and two people were reported to have injuries. The power cable broke around 19.00 local time (WIB), in the middle of the busy time directly after Ramadhan month of fasting.

Idul Fitri 'losing its color' in Jakarta The fasting month of Ramadhan and Idul Fitri celebrations in Jakarta have lost much of their colorful cultural traditions, a senior citizen says. Republika daily newspaper writer Alwi Shahab remembers that Idul Fitri Eve in the 1940s and 1950s was a special time for Betawi (native Jakarta) women. Unlike on ordinary days, they were allowed to spend the evening outside their houses, tasked with buying flowers for the Lebaran decorations, Alwi said.

Sumatera flood death toll at 239 A flash flood that swept through a resort town in North Sumatra province earlier this month may have killed up to 239 people, a report said Sunday (23/11/03). State news agency Antara said 157 bodies had been recovered and 82 people were still missing and presumed dead.
