Bali police thwart people smuggling effort News Agency Antara reports that the Bali police successfully thwarted an effort to smuggle more than 50 people originating from the Middle East to Australia via Bali and Madura. "The were 52 immigrants from the Middle East who we taken into custody near Kubu, Karangasem on Saturday night, February 20th," said the director of the Bali Water Police, Agus Doeta Supranggono.

Iranians on trial for smuggling crystal meth to Bali Bali's prosecutors have asked that 8 Iranian men standing trial in Denpasar for smuggling methamphetamine (sabu-sabu) be sentenced to 18 years in prison. The eight are: Daryoush Omid Ali, Alireza Safarkhanloo, Bahman Mirzaei, Mehdi Alinejad Golestan, Mohsen Mohammad Argasi, Saeid Soltani Nabizadeh, Masoud Soltani Nabizadeh and Shahbazi Saeid.

Rp 200 billion drug smuggling plot Jakarta airport foiled The customs at the international airport of Soekarno-Hatta near Jakarta have stopped the smuggling of some 26.8 kilograms of drugs and 17.5 liters of liquid drugs towards the Middle East. The drugs are worth some 195 billion Rupiah (13.8 million euro). Ten people from the Middle East were to fly on four separate flights to carry the drugs to their destination.

Four airlines seeking traffic rights to Indonesia Four foreign airlines have declared their interest in commencing scheduled flight services to Indonesia: Shanghai Airlines (China), China Eastern (China), Aeroflot (Russia) and Mohan Air (Iran). A Director General of Civil Aviation, Tri S. Sunoko, confirmed to Bisnis Indonesia that his office has received formal applications for traffic rights in Indonesia by the afore mentioned airlines.

Executions are the new hype in Indonesia Two members from one family, mother Sumiarsih (59) and son Sugeng (43), were executed earlier this month after they had been on death row for an astonishing twenty years. They were sentenced to death in the 1980's over a murder on five members of their own family out of vengeance. After twenty years in prison, they names - and their story - reappeared in the news once again. The end of their story was clear for almost twenty years already, but it just did never materialize. Probably someone did not like cleaning his office, so these two death row candidates were only executed by firing squad earlier this month.

Iran to build oil refinery in Banten The Iranian government is planning to construct an oil refinery plan with a value of 400 million US dollar in Bojonegoro, Serang, Banten, according to the Iranian ambassador to Indonesia, Behrooz Kamalvandi. "President Ahmadinejad has met with the Indonesian president in Jakarta several months ago to sign various Indonesian-Iranian cooperation documents, including the development of an oil refinery plant in Banten, "the Iranian Ambassador said.

Protests escalate ahead of Bush's visit Anti-American protests intensified on Saturday ahead of President George W. Bush's coming visit to the world's most populous Muslim country. "Bush is a terrorist!'' chanted 300 Islamic hard-liners, students and ordinary citizens who gathered outside the U.S. embassy in the capital, Jakarta, the target of near-daily protests all month. "He is guilty of killing Muslims!'' Bush was scheduled to visit Indonesia briefly on Monday.

Bush will face anger over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan when he visits mostly Muslim Indonesia on Monday for talks aimed at broadening ties with a strategic ally in the war on terror. Iran and Indonesia consider nuclear energy cooperation Iran and Indonesia are preparing to discuss possible cooperation in nuclear technology for “nonmilitary” purposes. The matter is likely to be tackled during a visit by Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla to Iran at the end of Ramadan, which finishes in the last week of October. Breaking the news, Iran's Ambassador Behrouz Kamal Vandi said collaboration for a "concrete" policy on nuclear cooperation will be discussed during the meeting in the context of several alternative energy sources. He said: "Nuclear energy is very important to the two countries to reduce their reliance on current sources of energy.”

Indonesian protesters condemn Israel's attacks Thousands of Muslim protesters have flooded the main streets of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, condemning continuing Israeli attacks on the Palestinian territories and Lebanon that have killed scores of civilians. The Government of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has called on Israel to stop the strikes and urged the disputing parties to get back to the negotiating table.

Indonesia placed on U.S. trafficking watch list Israel and Egypt, both U.S. allies, were demoted in a State Department ranking of countries judged on efforts to combat forced labor and other forms of exploitation. Three countries in Asia -- Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan -- were added to the watch list, cited as destinations or transit countries for forced labor and sexual exploitation. The Philippines was moved off the list.

Saturday's quake displaces some 660,000 people Some 660,000 people have turned into homeless in Yogyakarta province after their houses were flattened by a powerful earthquake, killing more than 5,800 people, an official said on Wednesday. Saturday's magnitude-6.3 quake pounded more than 135,000 houses into piles of bricks, tiles and wood in less than a minute.

Iran's President arrives in Indonesia amid N-row Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Jakarta early Wednesday for a visit during which he may ask Indonesia to play a mediating role with Western nations over his country's contested nuclear program, AFP reported. Report: Iran to take stake in Indonesia oil refinery Iran will invest up to 30 pct of the costs of building an oil refinery in Indonesia for which it will supply crude oil, the Wall Street Journal reported. In its online edition, the newspaper cited officials as saying the National Iranian Oil Refinery and Distribution Co will build the refinery with Elnusa, a unit of Indonesia's state-owned oil company Pertamina.

Iran President to visit Indonesia Tuesday According to an AFP report, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is to visit Indonesia Tuesday for bilateral talks ahead of a summit of eight large Muslim countries in Bali, Iranian Foreign Ministry said. "Dr. Ahmadinejad is going to visit Indonesia on Tuesday at the invitation of his counterpart (President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono). Bilateral issues and political, economic and cultural issues are going to be discussed," ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told reporters.

Tour d' Indonesia: Irishman David McCann wins second stage Irishman David McCann won the second stage of the 2005 Dji Sam Soe Tour d'Indonesia Tuesday in a time of five hours, two minutes and fifty-one seconds. McCann attacked his Indonesian breakaway companion in the final metres of the race to take the win on the streets of Purwokerto. The stage showcased the impressive strength of McCann's team, Giant Asia Racing, which managed to place all of its' riders in the decisive move of the day. Giant rider Paul Griffin finished third on Tuesday, while his Iranian teammates Hossein Askari and Ghader Mizbani finished in fifth and ninth place on the stage, respectively. Griffin and Askari now hold down first and second positions in the general classification.
