Lion Air plane evacuated at Djalaluddin Airport The Lion Air plane, which had skidded off the runway at Djalaluddin Airport in Gorontalo on August 6, 2013, was evacuated on Friday at 4 p.m. local time. The Lion Air Boeing 737-800 plane was towed away to the end of the runway by an excavator and is being guarded by patrol cars.

Series of quakes rock Indonesia A series of moderate earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.6, 5.4, 5.2 and 5.0 struck Indonesia on Wednesday, with no report of damage or casualties, meteorology agency said. The 5.6 quake jolted at 11:17 Jakarta time (04:17 GMT) with epicenter at 181 km southeast of Gorontalo in North Sulawesi and at 10 km in depth, an official of the agency said.

Garuda expands regional route network Bisnis.com reports that Garuda Indonesia will open 18 new regional routes commencing January 16, 2009. Pujobroto, the Airline's Corporate Vice-President, depicted the opening of the new routes as part of Garuda's overall growth plan. "The development of the new routes will be supported by 14 new Boeing 737NG that will begin gradually arriving in mid-2009," explained the Garuda official.

Powerful earthquake hits Minahasa, Sulawesi A powerful earthquake struck in an area off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi but the country later lifted a tsunami warning. The 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the coastal town of Gorontalo early on Monday, and was followed by a magnitude 5.8 aftershock, destroying houses and triggering a tsunami warning. There were no immediate reports of fatalities, officials said.

Main road over Sulawesi blocked by landslide between Poros and Pantura The Trans-Sulawesi highway between Poros and Pantura (the northern part of the road) which forms the main connection between the provinces of Gorontalo and Central Sulawesi has been cut of because of landslides at several points. The landslides occurred after heavy rains hit the district of North Gorontalo in the past few days.

Magnitude 6 earthquake strikes Gorontalo An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter Scale struck Sulawesi's Gorontalo province earlier today at 10.43 local time. (02.43 GMT). According to the Meteorological and Geophycical Institute (BMG) in Gorontalo the earthquake took place at 0.35 S 125.06 E, with a depth of 52 kilometers below the South Maluku Sea. The earthquake lasted for about ten seconds and wasn't able to produce a tsunami.

Six more parties pass screening for 2004 elections Six more of the 40 political parties undergoing factual verification have passed the final screening and are thus officially eligible for next year's elections, the National Elections Commission (KPU) announced on Tuesday. KPU chairman Nazaruddin Syamsuddin said the six parties had met the minimum requirements of having branch offices in at least two-thirds or 21 of the country's 32 provinces and in two-thirds of regencies or municipalities in those provinces.

Explosives stash found in Gorontalo Indonesian police said today they found 18 homemade bombs and 10 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, the same explosive material used in last year's Bali bombings. It was the third such discovery in two weeks on Indonesia's Sulawesi island. The chemical, which is also used as fertiliser, was seized yesterday from a rented house in the provincial capital, Gorontalo, said North Sulawesi Police Chief Brigadier General John Lalo.
