Indonesia lowers alert on volcano as activity drops Thousands of people who fled from a volcano on the eastern island of Halmahera are being advised to start returning to their homes after the activity of the volcano cooled down, told an official earlier today. The alert status was raised to the highest just last week after the Mount Gamkonora volcano started shooting out towering columns of ash and smoke, which sparked concerns of a major eruption.

Fears of continuing eruption of Gamkonora The Gamkonora volcano on the island of Halmahera in eastern Indonesia is again shooting out flaming rocks after a period of relative quiet. The volcano came to life last week when it emitted towering columns of ash and smoke, but it has been inactive for almost a day now.

Situation report: Gamkonora volcano Mount Gamkonora, located in South Ibu Sub-district, West Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, erupted yesterday at 14:50 hrs East Indonesian Time or 12:50 Jakarta time. Mount Gamkonora is located 3.5 hours from Ternate, capital of North Maluku Province. The mountain spewed cold lava and the dust is now piling up to 30 cm high with the radius of around 7.5 km from the epicenter. The Center for Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has increased the level of alertness from Level III to Level IV (the highest one) since yesterday. SATKORLAK PB reported that there have been five eruptions since 07:30 Jakarta time this morning.

Gamkonora volcano erupts on Halmahera Island Mount Gamkonora on the eastern Indonesian island of Halmahera erupted on Monday, sending thick clouds of smoke up to 1,000 meters in the air, as was told by the governments volcano monitoring agency. The alert level of the volcano was raised to the second highest level, meaning a major eruption was possible in the coming weeks and villages on it's slopes should be ready to be evacuated, according the website.
