Police name 100 suspects in forest fires The Riau provincial police have named 100 people as suspects in alleged forest and plantation fire cases in the provinces several districts and cities. "The number increases from 90 suspects previously," Riau Police Chief Brigadier General Condro Kirono informed ANTARA here on Thursday.

3.5 kilograms of heroin seized in port of Dumai The customs in Dumai have seized some 3.5 kilograms of heroin from Malaysia bound for Indonesia. The total value of the illegal drugs is estimated at some 6.5 billion Rupiah (580,000 euro). The drugs were seized after a 45-year-old woman was arrested after she arrived from Malaka in Malaysia with the Indomal Ekspress V.

26 dead, 250 rescued after ferry sinks in Riau Eventually 26 people were killed while 250 others were rescued from waters near the Riau Archipelago after a ferry that linked the area with mainland Sumatra sunk on Sunday afternoon. The Dumai Express 10 was sailing from Batam to Pekanbaru when it hit bad weather and sunk off the island of Karimun near Singapore in the northern part of the archipelago.

Ferry with 210 aboard sinks in Riau waters Rescue teams are moving in the direction of the location where the Dumai Express 10 has reportedly sunk earlier this afternoon. The ferry is said to have sunk in the waters off Tukong Iyu, near the island of Karimun in the Riau Archipelago. There were 213 adults and 15 children on board of the boat, but there is no report on their faith yet.

30 missing in boat accident in Riau waters A boat carrying a group of marriage party-goers sank in Duami waters, Riau province, western Indonesia on Saturday, with 30 passengers still missing, the national Antara news agency reported. The wooden fishing boat carrying a total 60 passengers was sailing from Mundam village, Dumai, to Batu Panjang in Rupat Island.

Telkom to build underwater cable link to Malaysia Indonesia's state-owned Telkom has signed a contract to build an undersea telecommunications cable link to Malaysia. The Jakarta Post reports Telkom signed the contract on Friday with a consortium comprising Telekom Malaysia Berhad and NEC Corporation. The cable will run for 160 kilometres between Dumai in Indonesia's Riau province and Melaka, Malaysia.

Soldiers, police clash in South Sulawesi A soldier and a policeman were wounded on Thursday in shoot-outs between troops and police in the town of Palopo, Luwu regency, South Sulawesi, officials and residents said. The clash erupted briefly near the Luwu Police station at around 9:30 a.m., and ended after Army commanders arrived at the scene. However, officials could not say who had started firing first, as the investigation was still underway.

Indonesia jails Singapore Muslim militant An Indonesian court has jailed the alleged Singapore chief of a radical Muslim network, who has admitted to plans to attack U.S. facilities in the city state, for immigration offences, an official said on Tuesday. Mulianto, a senior official at the Dumai court in Riau province on Sumatra island, said Mas Selamat Kastari was convicted on Monday and given an 18-month sentence. Riau lies next to Singapore.
