[update] Golkar party proclaimed election winner Golkar Party, the former political machine of Indonesian autocrat Suharto, won the largest percentage of votes in the April 5th general poll, election officials said on Wednesday. In the final tally, Golkar won 21.58 per cent of the 113.4 million valid votes cast in last month's parliamentary polls, said General Election Commission (KPU) chief Nazuruddin Syamsuddin.

Indonesia prepares for day of the generals DESPITE enduring 32 years of brutal military rule, Indonesia has not lost its respect for gold braid and epaulettes. Two of the three front-runners in the presidential race are former generals, and both served the monolithic New Order regime that finally crumbled in 1998. General Wiranto, chosen this week as the Golkar party's presidential candidate, was Indonesia's armed forces commander until 2000 and responsible for the military brutality in East Timor.

Suharto's old party seems set for victory after polls The Golkar party of former dictator Suharto appears set for victory in Indonesia's general election, less than six years after Suharto was pressured into resigning. Golkar had 20.71 percent of the 82.4 million votes counted as of mid-morning, leaving President Megawati Sukarnoputri's ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) trailing with 19.97 percent. "Golkar Party Returns" said a front-page headline in Kompas newspaper. The party, which backed Suharto's autocratic 32-year rule but which now claims to have reformed, leads in 23 of the 32 provinces.

19 parties reject election results Nineteen Indonesian political parties rejected the results of the April 5 parliamentary election, saying the process had been riddled with problems. "We have decided to reject the election results and demanded that they be cancelled," a spokesman for the group, Adnan Buyung Nasution, told a press conference after a meeting of representatives from the 19 parties. "There were too many cases of negligence and mistakes," Nasution said.

Golkar passes PDI-P, rivals reject tally Golkar Party has narrowly overtaken President Megawati Sukarnoputri’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), with more than 60% of the votes from the April 5 general election now counted. While analysts are predicting Golkar will surge further ahead as results continue to come in from the outer provinces, 19 other parties have said they will reject the election outcome because of rampant irregularities and alleged polling violations.

PDI-P holds on to gain with almost half of the votes counted President Megawati Sukarnoputri's party maintained a slight edge over the chief rival Golkar Friday with nearly half the votes tallied from Indonesia's April 5 general election. However Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) appeared to have suffered a big drop in support, winning 20.8 percent of 59.5 million votes tallied so far compared to the 34 percent it won in total in 1999. Golkar, the party which backed former dictator Suharto, was on 20 percent.

Jump in vote count boosts Megawati A spurt in votes counted in Indonesia's parliamentary elections on Wednesday put President Megawati Sukarnoputri's party neck-and-neck with the former political vehicle of ex-strongman Suharto. Earlier Golkar, Suharto's old party, had led the count. But the new totals still represented only 12 percent of the electorate, and opinion polls before the election as well as a scientific sampling of results afterwards suggest that Golkar will emerge on top when the count is done.

Megawati's party holds slim lead in Indonesia poll Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri's party clung to a slim lead on Tuesday following parliamentary elections, but with less than one percent of the vote counted, the race is wide open. Investors shrugged off the excruciatingly slow vote tally, as they pushed the Jakarta stock market up more than two percent in morning trade. Election observers said any reliable indication of the winner from the official count could take as long as a week.

Suharto's former party inches ahead in poll The former party of ousted Indonesian strongman Suharto was marginally ahead in vote counting Tuesday following elections, but with less than two percent of the ballots tallied the race was wide open. By early evening, with nearly two million votes counted, President Megawati Sukarnoputri's Indonesia Democratic Party-Struggle (PDI-P), with 18.39 percent of the vote, was neck-and-neck with Golkar at 18.42 percent.

Small parties start strong in vote Elections for a new Parliament proceeded smoothly on Monday with early and unofficial counts from polling places here in the capital showing surprising strength for two small parties, including an Islamic party. But election experts warned that this trend was unlikely to hold in the vital rural areas where most voters live and where the two major secular parties have strongholds.
