Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries confirmed that its patrol boat, the Hiu, on Thursday detained two Malaysian vessels, carrying five Thai and Burmese crew members, suspected of fishing illegally with trawl nets.

CPJ: Playboy editor's case is a test for Indonesia Erwin Arnada, editor of the now-defunct Indonesian edition of Playboy, was released for several hours on Wednesday in order to stand trial at Indonesia's Supreme Court on charges of public indecency. The former chief editor was arrested earlier this month after an arrest warrant was issued for him, allegedly because he failed to show up in court.

Sriwijaya Air skids off runway at Makassar airport A Boeing 737-200 belonging to Indonesian airline Sriwijaya Air has skidded of the runway at the Sultan Hasanuddin in Makassar, South Sulawesi. The accident happened around 14:30 local time yesterday after a tire blew out upon landing. All passengers and crew were safe and the plane was evacuated shortly after the landing.

Sales tax refund for visitors in 2010 The government will introduce a new policy on January 1, 2010, that will refund sales tax (VAT) spent on purchases by tourist visitors to Indonesia. Speaking to Bisnis Indonesia, the Director of Tax Regulation, Catur Rini Widosari, said the government will set a minimum level of Rp. 5 million (352 euro) to qualify for the 10% tax rebate, but there will be no maximum limit under the new policy.

Garuda Indonesia likely allowed to fly to Europe soon The European Union will soon partially lift a blanket ban on Indonesian airlines, imposed in 2007 after a series of deadly air accidents, the Indonesian Transport Ministry said Saturday. The EU's Air Safety Committee has recommended that the bloc drop the ban on national carrier Garuda Indonesia and three other airlines which are deemed to have met EU's safety standards, said Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the ministry.
