Jailed over sewing machine fraud Businessman Musfar Azis was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment by the Corruption Court on Thursday for overcharging the Social Affairs Ministry for a contract to deliver sewing machines. The Social Affairs Ministry directly appointed Musfar’s company, PT Ladang Sutera Indonesia (Lasindo), to procure the machines between 2004 and 2006.

75 killed in Sumatra quake Padang Mayor Fauzi Bahar said Wednesday at least 75 people had been killed during the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that rocked West Sumatra earlier in the afternoon. Kompas.com reported the mayor had phoned Vice President Jusuf Kalla to inform him of the number during an emergency Cabinet meeting at Kalla's house in Central Jakarta this evening.

Tsunami victims to get rice aid from the government Indonesian Social Services Minister Bachtiar Chamsyah said on Tuesday that the government had prepared 200 tons of rice for tsunami victims in West Java province's southern coastal regions. "The rice assistance will be extended step by step, considering that not all people in the areas experienced house damage in the disaster," the minister said this when he was visiting the disaster location in Pangandaran, Ciamis district, West Java province.

Flood death toll in South Sulawesi tops 263 At least 263 people have died since massive floods and landslides swept through several regencies in Indonesia's South Sulawesi province Wednesday, reports said Saturday. Sinjai regency was the worst hit by the disaster with death toll being confirmed at 248 as of Saturday, reported the national Antara news agency.

Three recognized as national heroes in state ceremony President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono posthumously bestowed the title of National Hero on three Indonesians on Wednesday to mark National Heroes Day, which falls on Nov. 10. The three figures are the late Kiras Bangun from North Sumatra, the late Bagindo Azizchan from West Sumatra and the late Andi Abdullah Bau Masseppe from South Sulawesi.

Indonesia admits slow response to quake Indonesia's government today admitted that it had been slow to deliver food and water to victims of Monday's earthquake. As rescuers continued to pull survivors from the rubble left by the disaster, Bachtiar Chamsyah, the country's social affairs minister, was confronted by angry residents of Gunung Sitoli, the main town on Nias island, to the north of Sumatra.

Eight bridges collapse in C. Sulawesi after flooding Eight bridges in Central Sulawesi have collapsed in floods caused by incessant rain over the past two weeks. The natural disaster, which is common during the wet season, also cut roads linking several parts of the province, an official said on Saturday. Mashud Kasim, the head of the Central Sulawesi Office of Settlement and Regional Infrastructure, said damages that the provincial government would have to bear amounted to Rp 38.5 billion (US$4.5 billion).

General: Martial law may be extended in Aceh Indonesia's top general says Aceh operations are 'ahead of schedule', but admit the authorities may extend martial law for the province beyond the current six-month order. The military and the police have also asked Parliament for an additional fund of US$220 million (S$385 million) to finance the campaign against the separatist Free Aceh Movement.

Demonstrations by Gus Dur supporters turn violent Disgruntled supporters of the incumbent President Abdurrahman Wahid continued venting their anger in East Java on Monday by vandalizing the National Awakening Party (PAN) and Golkar Party offices in the town of Gresik, some 30 kilometers northwest of Surabaya. No fatalities were reported, but the police said that they had failed to curb the violent actions committed by at least 2,000 people.
