An accident involving public transportation left four people dead on Sunday, which an expert said was the result of a lack of discipline among road users. Ayuningtyas, a 17-year-old high school student, died after being run over by a Transjakarta bus on Jl. Jatinegara Barat, East Jakarta, early on Sunday.

Earlier I wrote about the TransJakarta busway as a bad example of how things should be taken care of if implementing public transport. But this system does not only have negative sides of course, so TransJakarta also deserves a more positive piece of writing if you ask me.

With currently at least a dozen routes throughout many parts of Jakarta it is possible to travel around the city for just 3,500 Rupiah per person. It doesn't even matter how many transfers you make. The oldest routes have their own lanes through dense traffic conditions in many parts of the city, but elsewhere the big buses have to compete with a few million other road users.

At a normal weekday I took a reasonable early air-conditioned bus to Jakarta. I regularly make this trip because it enables me to travel cheap as well as fast - as fast as traffic allows the bus to go - to downtown Jakarta.

Some of the bus stops of the TransJakarta busway, that's in Jakarta indeed, have CCTV available. Normally this kind of technique is broken beyond repair soon after it has been installed, but this case is a positive exception. The camera's in 13 of the bus stops along corridor one and six are up and running. You can even view their images on the internet.

Yesterday in the late afternoon I was still in Jakarta. Not entirely according to my own planning, but those things are very hard to plan in this country, and even then there is not a real problem, because there is always another way to enjoy yourself and to get home as well.

Bandung is the next city to get some form of new public transport in the form of Trans Metro Bandung (TMB) rapid mass transport. After a long period of protests by other bus operators the new system will be put in use today. The head of the TMB operating company, Yadi Haryani, told that the mayor of Bandung already issued a decree on the official launch.

It was about to happen of course. But for the first time in ten years Indonesia it happened on a place where I could expect it the most. On the Jakarta Busway. It was a rush hour trip from Halte Bunderan HI to terminal Blok M. I traveled during rush hour because I had a scheduled birthday to attend in southern Jakarta at seven. I would not make it, but that was less of a problem.

The Jakarta Transportation Board is preparing steps to put automated gates at the recently opened Busway route Lebak Bulus - Harmoni. These gates will be the same as those installed on the second Busway route Pulogadung - Harmoni. The gates have to be installed to prevent other road users using the reserved bus-lanes on the route. "People have to learn that," said Riza Hasyim, vice-president of the Jakarta Transportation Board.

Overloaded they are and it is not just only on 'Halte Harmoni' where the situation is not really clear. There are even bigger exchange stops. One of the largest might just be 'Halte Senen', a little more to the north. This stop is situated directly at one of the corners of a busy intersection, directly under a fly-over. This is also the meeting point of a number of routes and transferring here is made difficult by hundreds of people that are finding their way here. That is not the only thing however what makes it a mess here.

Outside the use of the many thousands of - in general - old buses that are still in use today, there is a new option which was introduced just a few years ago. In 2004 these were brand new buses which were used on - then - just two routes. One route ran from north to south and back and the other one from west to east and back. The official name TransJakarta can be found on the buses, but for the rest the company is known as 'Busway'. And that is exactly what it is, because TransJakarta is too common. In the four year that this company exists hundreds of bus stops were constructed from durable materials and four more routes were organized as well. They seem to run all across the city without any logic though.

What is the fastest way to get from the north of Jakarta to somewhere in the southern part of the city? That is a question which is hard to answer for a city like Jakarta. With some 15 million residents and several hundreds of square kilometers of city it often is such a big unorganized situation that you will not be able to just go somewhere to buy groceries or to pick someone up.

Extra long buses for the Trans-Jakarta bus way system - often named just 'Busway' - will be used on the route Kampung Melayu-Ancol, or Corridor V. The launch of the new buses was executed by the governor of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo yesterday morning. Ten new extra long buses have been prepared to be operational starting from today. These new buses can only be used on this corridor, because the infrastructure here is completely ready as well.

To increase the frequency of buses in the TransJakarta bus system, the city government has promised to add more buses to th system. This will be arranged by Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo. At this moment, the TransJakarta bus system operator has 329 buses in it's fleet. The buses are used on seven corridors. Most routes now are overcrowded during operational hours, forcing people to be on overcrowded buses or to wait long for an empty bus to show up.

The Sutiyoso administration plans to revise the Jakarta Spatial Plan to improve the quality of life in the city and respond to environmental factors. "The revision is aimed at preventing further environmental destruction. Governor Sutiyoso himself wants the revision to come into effect in 2007," Jakarta Environmental Management Board (BPLHD) secretary Junani Kartawiria told a public discussion held by the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) on Thursday.

Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso did the honors on Sunday at City Hall on Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, sounding a siren to launch the opening of two more busway corridors in the capital. With the success of the first Blok M-Kota corridor, launched two years ago amid widespread criticism that it was unsuitable for Jakarta, the governor as well as members of the public, the business community and the once skeptical media had good reason to feel confident as the new blue-and-white additions went into service at Pulogadung terminal.

Despite the technical problems during the trial run last year, Governor Sutiyoso insists the new busway corridors will start limited operations on Jan. 15. But the buses driving the new routes may still be powered by diesel, rather than cleaner compressed natural gas (CNG). And the full quotient of buses won't come into service until April. "I don't see any significant obstacles (to the launch of the new busway project). We will go ahead with the plan to have our maiden ride on Jan. 15," Sutiyoso said at City Hall on Tuesday.

The Jakarta administration has earmarked some Rp 135 billion (11.4 million Euro) in its 2006 budget draft for the ambitious mass rapid transit (MRT) network, the first concrete step taken to materialize the undertaking. "I have been informed by Minister (of Transportation) Hatta Radjasa that the construction of the MRT line will begin next year. The project will be financed by a loan from the Japanese government," Governor Sutiyoso said early this week when asked about the budget allocation.

The Jakarta administration plans to rearrange the already-crowded and chaotic area of Blok M, South Jakarta, to make it a commercial center. The plan is aimed at curbing the fast-growing businesses, which have encroached on the residential areas of South Jakarta. "Blok M area will become a more comfortable commercial center with more space available to accommodate businesses," assistant to the city secretary for development affairs IGKG Suena said on Monday. "As a consequence, we will also clear the area of street vendors."

The construction of a 2.2-kilometer overpass on Jl. Hasyim Ashari, West Jakarta, for the busway corridor will result in the elimination of on-street parking along the road. "With the existing road only 30 meters wide, we have to widen it to at least 43 meters. Therefore, we have to clear all on-street parking," City Public Works Agency head Fodly Misbach said on Friday. Without alternative parking space available for the time being, he admitted the plan may effect businesses in the area.

Every day now onwards since the busy way project has launched in Jakarta the media has been following it like Tom and Jerry cartoons. The media has not left any single incident happened unheard, from ever the busway has launched like long queues, drivers protest, accident s, and small incidents which make them look big in paper and television. Why are they doing this? Do they want to prove that that this transportation would be of no use in the city? And if this is the prime objective of them it’s a sign of pessimism of these characters in a developing country like Indonesia. But instead they should stand united to support a project that is for the middle class and the poor who are the 60% population of their own country.

A day after calling for a perfect launch for the busway project, Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso said on Tuesday that two of the 56 busway buses had already been damaged. "It's true that two of the buses hit overhanging branches, shattering their windows," he said, without providing details. Sutiyoso had urged the 126 busway drivers to maintain their image as "good drivers" by not making any technical mistakes.

The tryout of the new extended three-in-one traffic policy, slated for Monday, skidded to a stop on Friday during a five-hour closed-door discussion between Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso and the busway project team. Sutiyoso postponed the discussion on the controversial issue to Monday.

The Jakarta administration will kick off on Monday the tryout of an extended three-in-one traffic policy along the 12.9-kilometer corridor of the bus rapid transit (BRT) or busway, from Blok M, South Jakarta, to Kota, West Jakarta. The one-month tryout is partly to anticipate the operation of 56 new buses along the busway special lane starting on Jan. 15.

The Jakarta administration announced on Tuesday that the controversial busway will open on Jan. 15, in line with the extension and expansion of the three-in-one traffic policy. Each passenger will be charged Rp 2,500 (29 U.S. cents) per trip along the Blok M-Kota route. The buses will operate from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The buses will be free for the first two weeks.

Objections from motorists to the Jakarta Administration's plan to extend the three-in-one traffic policy apparently did not deter the bureaucrats from continuing their plan and even expanding it. City secretary for development affairs Irzal Djamal, who is also head of the busway project team, told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday that the policy would be enforced to support the launching of 60 buses in the Bus Rapid Transit or busway project in January.

Governor Sutiyoso pledged on Monday that the ambitious Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project would be started in his second five-year term. "I will work hard to make it (the project) happen during my term," Sutiyoso told reporters after meeting the new Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Yutaka Limura at City Hall.

The government's overdue subway project is in danger of being overshadowed by the attractive busway program, which will be implemented at the end of this year in the capital. Under pressure to alleviate the city's congestion problem, but unable to finance the US$1.5 billion subway project, the city administration opted for a shortcut and approved the establishment of a busway along the city's main thoroughfares from Blok M, South Jakarta, to Kota, West Jakarta.
