The new Gajayana between Malang and Jakarta #2 The information panel above the LCD-television even indicates where the train is. We have just passed Kepanjen station and are headed for Blitar at a reasonable pace. Thanks to a power outlet in the wall of the train at every couple of seats and the mobile internet connection I always use, I can now even continue writing and internetting following my own biorhythm.

One dead in train derailment in East Java The assistant train driver was killed in a train derailment of the Penataran train. The train derailed and turned over in Malang, East Java province earlier this afternoon. Six passengers were injured in the accident. The locomotive and the first wagon jumped out of the tracks and crashed into a fence in the Karanglo area in Malang. It is assumed that the train hit a water buffalo before it derailed.

Prostitution zones in Blitar regency to stay open during Ramadan Prostitutes in the regency of Blitar don't have to worry any longer now the regional government has decided that not all prostitution areas in the district have to be closed down during the Ramadan this year. One of the three locations will stay open this year, so people that serve customers can go to that one place in the district of Selorejo. The red light areas in Talun and Ponggok will be closed however.

Situation report Mount Kelut volcano; no. 2 According to the Head of Directorate for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Management in Bandung, who leads an assessment mission in Blitar, the activity of the Mount Kelud volcano is still increasing. The level of volcanic tremors has nevertheless decreased over the last day. The deformation process of the crater is also increasing, thus the eruption continues to be imminent. BAKORNAS PB reported that mud and poisonous gases are likely to be emitted from the volcano.

Situation report Mount Kelut volcano; no. 1 On 16 October 2007 at 18:00 local time, the Directorate for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Management in Bandung, West Java Province, raised the alert status of Kelud Volcano to the highest level 4. This indicates that an eruption is imminent. Mount Kelud is located approximately 90 kilometres southwest of Surabaya in East Java.

Hundreds start evacuation from slopes of Mount Kelut Hundreds of villagers living inside the danger zones on the slopes of Mount Kelut are in the process of evacuating as the volcano threatens to erupt, told a representative of the Health Ministry. The head of the local crisis center, Rustam Pakaya, said that the evacuees were just the high-risk persons like pregnant women, babies, children, old persons and crippled.

Baby among ten dead at level crossing Ten women travelling to an Islamic Koran recital and a baby were killed today when a passenger train hit a utility at a level crossing in Indonesia, police said. Another woman and a small girl were in hospital with serious injuries after the accident in the Talun district of East Java province. The train was travelling from Surabaya to Blitar when it hit the truck on an unguarded crossing. The ute's driver escaped with minor injuries.

Nation celebrates Sukarno birthday What started as a day of sentimental remembrance became one full of political nuances as the nation commemorated on Wednesday the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of the state's founding father, Sukarno. The apex of the commemorations was a ceremony at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Center, the name of which was only recently reinstated after having been changed to the Senayan Sports Complex.

Gus Dur supporters start pouring into the capital Amid increasing worries of possible civil unrest over the current political situation, hundreds of supporters of President Abdurrahman Wahid arrived here on Monday to show support for their embattled leader. People grouped in the United People's Movement (Garab) from Malang and Blitar, East Java, arrived at Senen railway station in Central Jakarta on Monday. Many other supporters took buses to the capital.
