Floodwater still on Jakarta`s main roads paralysing traffic A number of main roads in Jakarta are still inundated by flood water with rain continuing to pour on the city from Tuesday night until Wednesday morning. Mount Seulawah Agam shows signs of activity The Center for Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation has put Mt. Seulawah Agam in Aceh on the lowest alert level following a series of earthquakes recorded in the last few days. As a consequence of the new status, the center declares the area in a radius of three kilometers from the crater off limits.

Two more dead by methanol tainted alcohol Repeating a deadly pattern that claimed 26 lives last year, locally produced alcohol tainted with methanol has sent at least 23 people to the hospital, two of whom have died. Those warded at Denpasar's Sanglah General Hospital all come from the Klungkung district of East Bali and were transferred to the capital for more intensive treatment.

Status of Mount Batur volcano raised to 'careful' The Mount Batur volcano, located on the island of Bali shows signs of renewed activity. The first recorded eruption of the volcano was in 1804. Since then it erupted at least 28 times with intervals of between one and 39 years. Normally the 1,717 meter high volcano erupts in a strombolian eruption where lava just flows out of it's crater. The last eruption as on July 7, 2000.

Baturraden appointed as Central Java's best tourist destination Baturraden, a nature conservation park located at the foot of Mount Slamet, won the award for best eco-tourism destination in Central Java. The Best Man-Made Tourism site award went to Bojongsari (Owabong) water tourism in Purbalingga. "We were judged as the best in the competition in Central Java," said Baturraden Tourism Manager in Banyumas, Soedarto.

Hundreds missing as ferry sinks off Sulawesi The motorvessel Teratai Prima, which was on it's way from Parepare in Southern Sulawesi to Samarinda in East Kalimantan, has sunk in the waters of Baturoro, West Sulawesi. There were some 250 passengers and crew on board. Only 18 people have been rescued so far. There is no information about the faith of the other people yet.

Bali water supply endangered by shrinking Lake Batur BeritaBali.com reports that observations made the Bali Environmental Agency conclude that sedimentation has decreased the depth of Bali's famous Batur lake by one meter over the past five years. Experts blame the rapid sedimentation on the diversion of surrounding land from natural jungle habitat to agricultural pursuits.

Death toll from bridge collapse rises to 7 The number of death toll from Wednesday's suspension bridge collapse in a mountainous tourist resort in Central Java province rose to seven on Thursday, a police officer said. "The fatality has become seven, two of those injured have died," Police chief of Baturaden district of the province named only Sudrajad told Xinhua by telephone.

Sightseers in death plunge as bridge fails A footbridge packed with local tourists broke at a mountain resort on Java island Wednesday, killing five people and injuring 29 others who plunged more than 60 feet to a rocky riverbed, police and tourist officials said. Surono, an employee at the Baturaden resort in Central Java province, said one of the steel cables holding the small bridge snapped. Police Chief Emron Putra Agung said five people were killed and 29 injured.

Flimsy tents now home for Indonesia quake survivors Tens of thousands of Indonesians took refuge in flimsy tents in the earthquake-hit region of Java island on Thursday, as officials urged a stop to aid distribution by night to prevent theft and looting. Rescue workers were still pulling dead bodies from the rubble of the 6.3 magnitude quake, which struck at dawn on Saturday and levelled entire villages around the ancient royal capital of Yogyakarta, reducing homes to piles of wood, tiles and tin.

12 killed in bus-train collision in South Sumatra A passenger bus collided with a train in the Indonesian province of South Sumatra early Thursday, leaving at least 12 people dead. The accident occurred in Baturaja town, some 800 km northwest of Jakarta, reported Detikcom online news service. "I was informed that 12 people were killed (in the accident)," Imron Safrizamhi, an employee of the train station in the provincial capital of Palembang, was quoted as saying.
