Soldiers and police used excavators to clear mud and logs off flattened homes after torrential rains sent landslides crashing into several villages on Java island this week. 14 killed, 112 feared dead in another Java disaster Continuing bad weather and a lack of equipment are hampering rescue efforts in the Central Java village of Cijeruk, where a landslide has killed at least 14 people. It is feared the death toll from the pre-dawn landslide on Wednesday could rise as over 100 others are still trapped under debris. "Fourteen bodies have been evacuated but we estimate that 112 others are still buried in the mud," said Basuki, the secretary of the village that had a population of 655 prior to the disaster. Of its 144 houses, only 44 are left standing.

Central Java landslide kills 10, many more feared dead A landslide triggered by heavy rains crashed into a village in Indonesia's Central Java province on Wednesday, killing at least 10 people and trapping many more under muddy debris, an official said. The pre-dawn landslide, the latest in a series on Java island that killed 71 people earlier this week, smashed into hundreds of houses in a mountainous village of around 700 residents.

Java's roads packed with holiday travelers Driyanto, a 42-year-old man from Jakarta, left the capital at 4 a.m. on Friday for Banyumas municipality in Central Java. He arrived in Cirebon, West Java, 12 hours later. The trip normally takes about four hours. "I arrived here at around 4 p.m., meaning it took 12 hours from Jakarta," Driyanto told The Jakarta Post while taking a travel break in Cirebon.

Malaria claims nine lives in Kebumen Following the outbreak of malaria in the Central Java regencies of Banyumas, Cilacap and Banjarnegara, the disease has spread to the neighboring regency of Kebumen, claiming at least nine lives in February. Most of these victims were residents of Donorojo village in Sempor subdistrict.
