Fire destroys central market in Bangli The Kidul Market in Bangli, northwest Bali, was heavily damaged by fire on Monday, September 9, 2012. The fire, which started at 2:30 pm, destroyed 104 shops, threatening both the livelihoods of the shop owners and the distribution network that drives a large part of the Bangli economy.

Two children dead of H5N1 bird flu on Bali The brother and sister, aged 10 and 5, admitted to Baliís Sanglah General Hospital and diagnosed as infected with the H5N1 (Avian Flu) virus on Friday, October 7, 2011, have died.

Death toll from rabies now at 108 Kompas.com confirms that the rabies virus has now claimed 108 victims in Bali. Ketut Gede (55) from Bangli died at the Sanglah General Hospital shortly after presenting with the clinical symptoms of rabies. "The victim was experiencing seizures, difficulties in swallowing, and phobias to both water and light," explained Dr. IGB Ken Wirasandhi of the rabies control team at the hospital.

Bali's rabies saga continues Confirmed cases of rabies now stretch to all four corners of Bali with rabid dogs now detected in two communities at Sambirenteg, Tejakula in the Buleleng regency, North Bali. Officials in Buleleng are responding by educating the local community on preventive steps to stop the further spread of the disease.

Bali's rabies crisis spreads to new areas Radar Bali confirms that Bali's rabies epidemic has now spread to five of the island's nine regencies and metropolitan areas. According to Ida Bagus Alit, the Head of Bali's Animal Husbandry Department (Dinas Peternakan) confirmed that Karangasem and Bangli now have confirmed cases of the deadly disease in their dog populations, while previously cases of rabies were confined to Denpasar, Badung and Tabanan.

Bali water supply endangered by shrinking Lake Batur BeritaBali.com reports that observations made the Bali Environmental Agency conclude that sedimentation has decreased the depth of Bali's famous Batur lake by one meter over the past five years. Experts blame the rapid sedimentation on the diversion of surrounding land from natural jungle habitat to agricultural pursuits.

Indonesia rejects Australian prison transfer Indonesia's justice ministry has denied a prison transfer request by convicted Australian drug smuggler, Schapelle Corby. The ministry says Corby has only served four years of a 20 year sentence and her request may have been granted if she had served more of her sentence.

Depok, Tangerang named 'dirtiest' cities The government announced a list of the country's dirtiest cities for the first time on Friday in a bid to encourage municipal administrations to clean up their acts, and their heavily polluted urban areas. Previous governments had only made the names of the cleanest cities public.
