Magnitude 5.2 quake strikes Talaud in North Sulawesi An earthquake with an intensity of 5.2 on the Richter scale struck southwest of Talaud Islands in North Sulawesi province on Tuesday at 5.21 am local time. The medium quake struck under the sea in a depth of 5 kilometers, but has no potential to cause a tsunami, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said in Bandar Lampung.

Government: 'Unemployment targeted below 10 percent' The government will try to lower the official unemployment rate to a single digit. The number of fully unemployed in Indonesia had reached just 10,98 million. "One way of dealing with unemployment, is to develop domestic investment," said Secretary General of the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry Hari H. Saleh in Bandar Lampung yesterday. Upon the opening of a national working and consultative meeting of the Indonesian Businessmen's Association (APINDO), he said that there were still some issues to overcome however.

New suspected bird flu cases emerge in other regions Four people in Bandung, Semarang and Bandar Lampung have been hospitalized with suspected avian influenza after showing symptoms of the disease. Chicken vendor Suprat, 58, was admitted to Dr. Kariadi Hospital in Semarang, Central Java, on Tuesday with a high fever, cough and respiratory problems.

Indonesia train crash kills seven At least seven people have been killed and many more injured in a collision between two trains on Indonesia's Sumatra island. A packed passenger train ploughed into a stationary coal train near the town of Bandar Lampung, 250km (155 miles) north-west of Jakarta, say police.

Road accidents claim 14 lives At least 14 people died in road accident on Friday, as most Indonesian Muslims were preparing to observe the Idul Fitri holidays next week. Ten people were killed in a road accident in the East Java district of Paiton, while the other four died in another accident in South Lampung regency, Lampung province. Brig. Wayan, a police officer at the Paiton police subprecinct, said the tragic accident in Paiton began as a tanker truck was heading south west toward Surabaya, from Probolinggo regency in Friday morning.

Unusual high temperature Many people who have complained about the extremely hot weather just recently have the answer as the Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (BMG) acknowledged on Wednesday the significant temperature increase that hit parts of the country from last week would end late this month. It has affected a number of provinces in Java, Sumatra, East and West Nusa Tenggara, according to chief of the BMG's weather forecasting division Achmad Zakir.
