Indonesian gamblers help Singapore visitor arrivals soar Singapore welcomed 30.3 percent more visitors in May than the same month a year ago as the city-state’s two new casinos helped draw in tourists. The Singapore Tourism Board said on Monday that 946,000 people visited the city-state last month, up from 939,000 in April and 726,000 in May 2009.

Minister: 'Nuclear power plant to be built in Banten' The Minister of Research and Technology, Kusmayanto Kadiman, has said that the government is planning on building a nuclear power plant on the northern shore of Banten province. Kadiman said that the power plant was to be constructed between 2015 and 2020 and should have a capacity of 1.000 Megawatt. The total cost of the project is some two billion euro.

HIV population among fastest-growing in Asia The HIV population in Indonesia is among the fastest growing in Asia, officials said yesterday at the presentation of a World Health Organisation (WHO) review concerning the epidemic. Director general of the contagious diseases department of the Health Ministry, I Nyoman Kandun said HIV was spreading quickly among so-called high-risk groups and in parts of the country where health care is of low quality.

Jakarta readies funds for MRT project The Jakarta administration has earmarked some Rp 135 billion (11.4 million Euro) in its 2006 budget draft for the ambitious mass rapid transit (MRT) network, the first concrete step taken to materialize the undertaking. "I have been informed by Minister (of Transportation) Hatta Radjasa that the construction of the MRT line will begin next year. The project will be financed by a loan from the Japanese government," Governor Sutiyoso said early this week when asked about the budget allocation.

South Sulawesi wants $400m to build railway The South Sulawesi provincial administration is seeking EUR380 million (more than Rp 4 trillion) for the construction of a 145-kilometer railway connecting Makassar and Pare-pare starting in 2015 as part of the effort to accelerate economic development in the province. Local transportation office director Farid Suaib said the development of a railway was essential to spur inter-regency trade in the province.

Riau may become a desert in 40 years Deforestation may turn the resource-rich province of Riau into a desert in 40 years unless preventive measures are taken, the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) said. The province's Spatial Layout Plan (RTRWP) up to 2015 includes converting protected forests and water catchment areas into timber estates, which will likely turn Riau into a vast barren land. The situation is worsened by illegal logging and the rapid switch to mono-cultivation where land is cleared to grow only one type of cash crop, the WWF revealed.
