It has been a year ago that I used the Indonesian railroad services. That was a trip from Yogyakarta to Jakarta with a dirty, cold and old-fashioned train. Trains like that are still widely available on Java. It normally is really cold on board of one of these trains, which makes traveling with them not the best option available.

I moved from Yogya some five months ago now. I don't have any feeling that resembled homesickness, but it is not bad at all to be back here again for a few days. A few days back already I woke up when the bus had already left the area of Semarang, which meant that it was less than three hours traveling before the bus would drop us at one of the big intersections along the southern ring road of the city.

The Jakarta Post reports that Garuda Indonesia has allocated US$100 million (70 million euro) for expenditure in 2010 as the first of five yearly installments that will increase the airline's present fleet from 67 to 116 aircraft. Garuda's finance director Eddy Purwanto told the press, "We plan to spend $100 million in capital expenditure in 2010 to buy more planes as well as to fulfill Garuda's other operational expenditure."

Malaysia Airlines have increased to three flights a day its services between Kuala Lumpur and Bali. Tourist visitors traveling from the Malaysian capital have the choice of three departure times at 08:45, 12:25 and 15:20. The additional flight, increasing from twice to thrice the number of daily flights, will remain in effect until December 31, 2009.

President Yudhoyono asked the police once more to release any evidence related to the case, because until now the police only pointed fingers but never produced any evidence.

Despite repeated warnings from the government to conserve sub-terrain water reservoirs in Bali, the Bali Post reports that the state water company PDAM has little hesitation to tap into Bali's diminishing underground water reserves. According to the report, in every municipality and regency of Bali, PDAM derives more water from sub-terrain reservoirs than it does from surface sources. This approach offers several advantages, including less competition with farmers for water from rivers and streams and the reduced cost of tapping into sub-terrain sources that requires less treatment than the more polluted water in Bali's rivers and streams.

The prolonged dry season currently being experienced in Bali is having profound impact on the island's ecology. As reported by Bali Post, of the 165 rivers found on the island, 73 have now run dry. Of the remaining 92 river still flowing, most of these are doing so with substantially reduced flow rates. Many of the dried-up rivers are in West Buleleng, East Buleleng, Kubu and Seraya areas of Bali.

It is estimated that over 600 people are buried. The government has said that the current death toll stands at 540, with most deaths in urban areas like Padang and Pariaman.

The USGS has released an earthquake intensity map of the area hit by the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the area of Padang and Pariaman in West Sumatra yesterday late in the afternoon. The map only indicates estimates of damage that could be expected after such an earthquake and is not based on news reports.

A strong undersea earthquake struck off the western coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island late Wednesday afternoon, but there were no immediate reports of injury and damage, seismologists said. The quake, measuring at 7.6 on the Richter scaled, struck at 5:16 pm (1016 GMT) at a depth of 71 kilometers, about 57 kilometers south-west of Pariaman on West Sumatra province, Indonesia's National Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said.

Bandung is the next city to get some form of new public transport in the form of Trans Metro Bandung (TMB) rapid mass transport. After a long period of protests by other bus operators the new system will be put in use today. The head of the TMB operating company, Yadi Haryani, told that the mayor of Bandung already issued a decree on the official launch.

A sub-sea interconnecting high-voltage cable carrying power from Java to Bali failed on Wednesday evening, September 15, 2009, plunging much of Bali into darkness starting from 19:05 local time (GMT+8). The head of the national police, Bambang Hendarso Danuri, has confirmed that Noordin M. Top, the most wanted terrorist in Southeast Asia, has been killed in a raid near the city of Solo in Central Java earlier today.
"The fingerprints we took from one of the terror suspects' bodies matched those of Noordin that we obtained from Malaysia. We found similarity in at least 14 points, which is a justifiable proof," told Bambang during a press conference at the National Police Headquarters.
