DENPASAR, BALI - Mari Elka Pangestu, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy warns that Indonesian President-Elect Joko Widodo plans to attract 20 million foreign tourists by 2019 will require hard work. Quoted by Metrobali.com Pangestu said on Tuesday, August 19, 2014, “The target of 20 million foreign tourist in five years will require a lot of hard work.”
In the past two years, Indonesian tourism has managed to grow by 8%, growing to the current total of bwteen 8-9 million foreign tourists each year. The Minister was still optimistic that Indonesia would end 2014 with 9.5 million foreign tourists, increasing from 8.7 million in 2013.
“This means that in order to achieve 20 million, our tourism needs to grow at an average rate of 16% or more each year, or at rate twice the current rate of growth in arrivals,” Pangestu explained.
Prior to President-elect Joko Widodo’s setting an ambitious five-year target of 20 million foreign tourists by 2019, Minister Pangestu had set her own target for tourism growth of 13.5 million tourists by 2019.
Saying Joko Widodo’s higher target will demand additional attention be paid to repairing the infrastructure, improving airline connections, greater preparations for tourism in the provinces, enhancements at tourist objects and preparation of qualified tourism workers. The goal of 20 million foreign tourists to Indonesia by 2019 was set forth in the book “22 Clever Solutions for Indonesia” written by Indonesia’s next president.
