BANDUNG, WEST JAVA - Indonesian presidential candidate Joko Widodo alias Jokowi, as he is popularly called, claimed he is using unpaid volunteers to support his bid for president in the election scheduled on July 9.
"This is actually our power," he said while giving a speech at the declaration of support by the West Java elders to the Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla (JK) pair at the Citra Sports Hall here on Thursday.
Jokowi, who is currently the Jakarta governor, will contest in the presidential election together with former vice president JK as his running mate.
He said he will only rely on volunteers to win the election and later build Indonesia, while referring to his rival, who according to him, has a large amount of money and support from many political parties.
Jokowi will compete against Prabowo Subianto, a former commander of the armys special forces and also a businessman, who pairs with Hatta Rajasa, who is a former chief economic minister.
"The other side has a large amount of money unlike us. They also have many political parties to support them, but we also have many volunteers," he said.
For the election, Jokowi-JK is supported by four political parties: the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) to which he belongs, the National Democrats (Nasdem), the Nation Awakening Party (PKB), the Peoples Conscience Party (Hanura) and the Justice and Indonesia Unity Party (PKPI).
Meanwhile, Prabowo Subianto-Hatta is supported by six political parties: the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), to which Prabowo belongs; the National Mandate Party (PAN), which is Hattas party; the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS); the United Development Party (PPP); Golkar Party; and the Moon and Star Party (PBB).
Jokowi said the volunteers have so far contributed t-shirts, stickers, banners and billboards for campaign purposes. "These are all from the volunteers. This is where the power of the volunteers lies," he said.
Jokowi appealed to all volunteers, including supporters from political parties, to work together and visit residents to familiarize the Jokowi-JK presidential and vice presidential candidates among the people. "Tell them that Jokowi is like this and JK is like that. Do not allow them not to know us," he said.
