MALANG, EAST JAVA - Presidential candidate from Indonesian democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that he wanted a small group of party coalition if he gets elected as Indonesian president.
"Too many parties in a coalition will lead to under-the-table lobbying and corruption. Maybe one coalition can consist of seven parties, but I wont ask other parties to join me. If they want to join me, Im okay with it," Jokowi noted on Sunday during the meeting with his supporters in Malang.
The current Governor of Jakarta expressed hope that his party, the PDIP, will secure high number of chairs in the parliament in order to support him to be the president at the presidential election on July 9. Although Indonesia holds direct voting for its president, not being represented by the lawmakers, Jokowi pointed out that a majority in the parliament for PDIp will help him conduct presidential tasks.
Meanwhile PDIPs Secretary General Tjahjo Kumolo explained that up till now, there were representatives from 10 political parties whom he had met to discuss a possible coalition in the upcoming presidential election.
PDIP is considered to be a strong contender to win the 2014s legislative and presidential election. There are 12 parties participating in the election namely National Democratic Party (Nasdem), the National Awakening Party (PKB), the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP), the Golkar Party (Golkar), and the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra).
The line-up also includes the Democratic Party (Demokrat), the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP), the Peoples Conscience Party (Hanura), the Crescent Star Party (PBB) and the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI). They will contest to win the votes of 158.8 million eligible voters.
