JAKARTA - Siti Hardiyanti, popularly known as Mbak Tutut, has decided to campaign for Golkar Party and has officially registered her name with the General Elections Commission (KPU).
"I just want to help Golkar, but I dont want to be involved in the politics. I want to support Golkar because this party was once nurtured by my father," Mbak Tutut, the eldest daughter of Indonesias second president, Soeharto, explained at the Halim Perdanakusuma air force base here on Monday.
She was about to leave for Yogyakarta to join the Golkar campaign activities, while Golkar Chairman Aburizal Bakrie and Secretary General Idrus Marham left for Lampung, Sumatra, for campaigning.
Mbak Tutut explained that she wanted to live peacefully and hoped that the campaigning period will run smoothly. She added that the political parties should concentrate on improving peoples welfare rather than fighting against each other.
Indonesia will hold the legislative elections on April 9; its campaign period is between March 16 and April 5. A total of 12 political parties at the national level kicked off a 21-day nationwide campaign on Sunday to win the votes of 158.8 million voters in the legislative elections on April 9.
On Saturday, the leaders of the 12 political parties, fielding candidates in the 2014 legislative elections, declared their commitment to maintaining the security and integrity of the campaigns to be carried out from March 16 to April 5.
The national parties consist of the National Democratic Party (Nasdem), the National Awakening Party (PKB), the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP), the Golkar Party (Golkar), and the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra).
The line-up also includes the Democratic Party (Demokrat), the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP), the Peoples Conscience Party (Hanura), the Crescent Star Party (PBB) and the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI). On July 9, the country will organize presidential elections.
