YOGYAKARTA - Four motorists died after being hit by a train at a railroad crossing in Gamping village, Sleman district, Yogyakarta on Thursday. According to an eyewitness Priyo Priyono, the accident took place at 6 a.m. local time, when the railroad crossing gate closed to make way for "Prameks" train that was heading for Solo.
The gate then opened seconds after the first train passed the crossing, and tens of motorcycles started to move went across through the crossing. All of a sudden, a Senja Utama train, bound in the opposite direction, hit four motorists that were already halfway through the crossing.
"After the Prameks train passed, the crossing gate remained open, when suddenly, another train from the opposite direction came and hit the four motorists," Priyo explained.
Priyo stated that he had tried to stop the motorists who were crossing the railroad but it was too late; four motorists were already on the other track. "I tried to prevent them from crossing, but the motorists from the other side were insistent on crossing the railroad," Priyo reinstated.
The four casualties have been identified as Purwanti, a Somodaran village resident, Sumardi, a Kanoman village resident, Latifa a student from Kronggahan Village and Fikri Yuda,a student from Temuhu Lor.
Sleman police chief Adjuct Senior Police Commissioner Iksan Amin stated that the police is still investigating the incident to define the cause of the accident, whether it was a human or a technical error. "We are still investigating this accident and nothing can be revealed as yet," Iksan noted.
