DENPASAR, BALI - The Jakarta Globe reports that high-ranking Islamic leaders in Indonesia continue to object to plans to hold the Miss World Beauty Pageant in Bali in the week leading up to the final round on September 8, 2013.
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has joined other Islamic groups in calling on the government to cancel the beauty pageant.
Those opposed to the event contend that women parading their beauty in public goes against Muslim teachings and should not take place in a country where the majority belong to the Islamic faith.
In partial appeasement to the religious sensibilities of the hard-line Muslims, the Miss World Pageant organizers have dropped the bikini round of competition. Muhyiddin Junaidi, an MUI senior official, said: “Exposing women’s bodies in public is ‘haram,’ forbidden by Islamic teaching.”
Junaidi added: “Even though the bikini event is being axed, the contestants will still wear tight dresses and expose parts of their body.”. MUI is also urging its member to boycott nationwide broadcasts of the Miss World contest.
Over 130 women will come to Bali to compete at Miss World with preliminary rounds of competition in Bali and the final in Bogor, West Java, considered a Islamic religious stronghold.
Bali security officials have promised to provide a high level of security for the Miss World Competition as a “dry run” for the security to be provided the APEC Summit in the first week of October.
