JAKARTA - The Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of former Bank Indonesia`s senior deputy governor Miranda Goeltom over a travel check bribery case, upholding her three-year jail term previously meted out by lower and appellate courts.
"There is a legal fact proving that the convict has committed a series of deeds with the transfer of travel checks to legislators until she was elected senior deputy governor of Bank Indonesia (BI)," Artidjo Alkostar who chaired Supreme Court (MA)`s Appeal Panel on Miranda`s case, said here on Friday.
He said that the first level and appellate courts had considered relevant matters rightfully. Artidjo said the MA`s verdict on Miranda`s appeal was decided by acclamation by all members of the judge panel which was chaired by Artidjo with judge members consisting of Justice Mohammad Askin and MS Lumme on Thursday, April 25.
The Corruption Crime Court has previously handed down a three-year jail sentence to Miranda with a fine of Rp100 million in lieu of three months in solitary confinement. The corruption court said that Miranda was legally and convincingly proven guilty of violating article 5 point (1) of the Corruption Eradication Law in conjunction with article 55 point (1) of the Criminal Codes.
On this verdict, Miranda pleaded an appeal to the higher court but the appellate court upheld the first level court decision. The travel check bribery case has dragged at least 25 members of the House of Representatives (DPR) for the 1999 - 2004 period to the prison. The court said Miranda was proven to have bribed 25 legislators with the assistance of Nunun Nurbaeti, who had previously sentenced to 2.5 years.
