BANDUNG, WEST JAVA - The Mount Tangkuban Parahu volcano, north of the large city of Bandung, has erupted earlier today. The eruption was clearly visible this time. The volcano has been increasinly active since the start of this year and earlier showed signs of being in eruption, but those were only visible with sensitive instruments.
This morning around sunrise the volcano ejected a cloud of ash and volcanic sand. Most of it ended up in the crater of the volcano itself, which is a popular tourist destination because of the short distance to the city of Bandung. In the existing crater a new cone with volcanic debris has formed.
On information measured and recorded by the Center for Volcanology and Natural Disasters PVMBG, it is visible that the activity of the volcano has increased in the last few months. This eventually lead to this eruption, however there was a smaller eruption two days ago as well.
Video footage made during the eruption shows how volcanic material reaches heights up to 500 meters, which is 200 meters higher than the parking lot located at the crater rim and where normally many hundreds of visitors are found.
The eruption of this morning only lasted eight minutes, but tourists are kept away from the volcano for a few weeks already. This out of fear that there will be a larger eruption. Still, visitors bring a visit to the top parking lot every day.
