JAKARTA - Indonesian airline Sky Aviation assured the public that the Russian-made Sukhoi Superjet 100 is safe during a press conference unveiling the first of 12 planes purchased by the small domestic airline on Thursday.
Sky Aviation’s $380.4 million purchase will double the carrier’s fleet and effectively peg the airline’s future on the safety record of the problem-prone plane.
Russian carrier Aeroloft grounded nearly half of its Sukhoi Superjet fleet earlier this month amid technical problems, according to Reuters reports. On Sunday one of the airline’s remaining Sukhoi Superjets suffered an engine failure during an attempted takeoff, according to Interfax reports.
Sky Aviation’s head of marketing said the company was working hard to restore the public’s trust in the passenger jet. “We will prove that the Sukhoi Superjet 100 is safe and we will regain the public’s trust,” Sutito Zainudin, general manager of marketing at the airline, told Kompas.com.
The passenger jet crashed into West Java’s Mount Salak during a promotional flight out of Jakarta last May. The cause of the accident, which killed at least 45 people, was declared pilot error by Indonesia’s National Committee for Transportation Safety (KNKT).
Sky Aviation had already inked the 12-plane deal at the time of the crash. The delivery was delayed until the Indonesian Aviation Authority tested the aircraft. Aviation officials stamped their approval of the low-cost plane on November of 2012.
The company’s president director said the airline had an agreement to purchase spare parts from an Italian vendor. “The plane’s safety, reliability and spare parts are guaranteed through the Super Care Assessment Program with Super Jet International,” Krisman Tarigan told Merdeka.com.
Krisman added that the plane had also been certified to fly by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Sky Aviation plans to increase passenger loads by 70 percent as it eyes new routes out of Makassar. “It can support the Indonesian economic hub,” he said, “Especially in areas that need air transportation.”
The first Sukhoi Superjet 100 arrived on Wednesday. The airline expects to receive four additional planes in the coming year. The Russian Ambassador to Indonesia said he was proud to welcome the first Sukhoi Superjet 100 to Southeast Asia and urged domestic airlines to take care when maintaining the plane.
