JAKARTA - Indonesia still bans female domestic helpers from working in the Middle East, particularly in countries which are still affected by a moratorium, a minister said.
"I would like to stress that Indonesia still bans female workers in the domestic sector from working in the Middle East, particularly in countries which are still affected by workers` placement moratorium issued by Indonesia," Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar said here on Monday.
The minister said that the moratorium has been imposed in an effort to protect Indonesia`s female workers in the domestic sector abroad. Up to now, the Indonesian government is still imposing a moratorium on female workers placement in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Kuwait.
Muhaimin said that the moratorium would continue to be effective in those countries until Indonesian workers could obtain legal protection and their basic rights there. He said that the Indonesian government was now active in lobbying recipient countries so that Indonesian workers would be able to obtain basic rights such as protection, social insurance and work safety.
The minister said however that the efforts made by the government had not yet produced satisfactory results. He said that the Indonesian government was now still discussing memorandums of understanding (MoU) on workers placement and protection with Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Germany, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand and Kuwait.
