Over 3,000 people evacuated over floods in Jakarta JAKARTA - At least 3,000 residents have been evacuated to safer places and emergency shelters due to flooding in various parts of Jakarta until 8 am on Wednesday, disaster mitigation officials said.

"The emergency tent which accommodates the biggest number of evacuees is located in the Rawa Buaya area, namely at KM 14 of Jalan Daan Mogot, West Jakarta," Tasman of the Jakarta Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), said here on Wednesday.

He said that his agency has set up at least 14 evacuation centers to provide emergency shelters for the flood victims. "There are 3,456 evacuees being sent to emergency centers in various parts of Jakarta up the wee hours on Wednesday," Tasman said.

He said that of the flood victims, 1,370 were evacuated to the emergency shelters in Kampung Melayu (East Jakarta), 605 in Cililitan (East Jakarta), 200 in Kedoya Selata and 214 in Bidara Cina.

Others are found the emergency tends in Cawang (90 evacuees), Bukit Duri (218), Pejaten Timur (60), Pondok Pinang (17), Ulujami (150), Lenteng Agung (87) and Kedaung Kali Angke 200.

Up to now, logistics such as medicines, food, blankets and paramedics needed by the flood victims are still enough, according to the PBBD offcial. The floods in Jakarta are now found in 50 locations with an average height of flood waters between 30 cm and 300 cm.

Jakarta Crisis Center official Didit said that the worst hit area was the Kampung Pulo, where flood waters reached three meters high while the height of the flood waters in Cawang was one meter, Bukit Duri one meter and Tebet also one meter.

Didit said that the eight of the water level at the Katulampa sluice was 70 cm with a level III alert status. In the meantime the water level of the Manggarai sluice was 925 cm and of the Depok sluice 200 cm with alert II status respectively.

"The height of water level at the Manggarai sluice in the wee hours on Wednesday has dropped from 930 cm to 925 at 6 am so that its alert status was also lowered from alert I to alert II," Didit said.

Flooding is an annual problem for Jakarta during the rainy season. There are least 13 rivers flowing from mountainous areas of Puncak and Bogor in the south of Jakarta. They criss-cross the capital city before emptying into the sea in the north.
