JAKARTA - The Central Jakarta District Court on Thursday sentenced gangland boss John Kei to 12 years in prison for his involvement in the murder of businessman Tan Harry Tantono aka Ayung.
The sentence was lighter than the 14-year prison term demanded by prosecutors. Presiding judge Supradja said that John was guilty of violating Article 340 of the Criminal Code on premeditated murder.
Judges also handed down 1.5-year prison terms for Muklis B Sahab and Joseph Hungan who abetted John in the murder. It remains unclear whether John will file an appeal against the verdict.
Dozens of John’s supporters flocked the court. The trial was heavily guarded, with police deploying hundreds of personnel and two water cannon to anticipate any trouble.
The trial revealed that John, who runs a debt-collection business, ordered his men to kill Harry, the owner of PT Sanex Steel Indonesia, after the businessman failed to pay John debt-collection fees of Rp 200 million (US$20,650).
Ayung died after being repeatedly stabbed in a room in the Swiss-Belhotel in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, on Jan. 26.
John, one of the most influential gang leaders in Jakarta's underworld, was detained in February in a major arrest operation involving 70 police officers. He was allegedly having a methamphetamine party in a hotel in East Jakarta and was shot in the leg while resisting arrest.
