DENPASAR, BALI - Former Indonesian Minister of Tourism and keen observer of the national tourism industry, I Gede Ardika, has declared that the development of sustainable tourism projects demands conservation of water and energy resources as a necessary prerequisite.
Quoted by the State News Agency Antara, Ardika said: “The development of tourism must reduce the need for exploiting natural resources, such as water and energy, while at the same time avoiding the production of sewage and trash." Ardika’s comments were made during a presentation on green tourism delivered in Nusa Dua, on Wednesday, November 21, 2012.
According to the former Tourism Minister, the conservation of natural resources and reduction of environmental impact is now part of the standard of global tourism ethics and the Indonesian tourism law of 2009. Moreover, according to Ardika, the province of Bali has codified environmental conservation and protection in provincial regulations promulgated in 2012.
Ardika said tourism in Bali must preserve and promote local culture based on Hindu religious ethics, improve the island’s economy and enhance the people’s welfare while conserving the natural environment.
