JAKARTA - The Ministry of Transportation plans to build a link between the commuter railway line and the Trans-Jakarta bus lane in an effort to meet the needs of mass transportation in Jakarta by 2013.
"The commuter railway line will connect with the Trans-Jakarta bus lanes. The work has to be completed within one year," the Deputy Minister of Transportation, Bambang Susantono, said here on Wednesday.
Susantono also said that the ministry will add to the existing number of Trans-Jakarta buses and reorganize other public transportation. "These measures need to be taken to address traffic congestion in Jakarta. Besides, the measures are in accordance with the directives given by the Governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo," he explained.
Susantono further explained that Trans-Jakarta buses will be fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS) devices to provide information to passengers at bus stops and train stations. "With the use of the GPS system, passengers at bus stops and train stations will be informed about the whereabouts of the next bus on their routes," he said.
According to him the additional facilities will improve public transport services, which have been a bone of contention for Jakarta residents. The deputy minister welcomed the governor`s plan to review the feasibility and sustainability of the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) project.
"I think it`s the right move since the Governor must find out about the sustainability of MRT in Jakarta before implementing the project. He also needs to know the costs involved in completing the MRT project," Susantono stated. "The governor agreed in principle on the MRT project, which is expected to be sustained by Trans-Jakarta buses, but the evaluation remains to be done," he added.
