JAKARTA - American Attorney Danforth Newcomb, who specializes in prosecuting and fighting corruption, is visiting Indonesia from September 17-28 to speak on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in the United States.
Newcomb founded the anti-corruption practice at the New York office of global law firm Shearman & Sterling LLP and was approved by the United Nations as an expert on ethics and compliance, according to information posted on the official website of the US embassy on Friday.
Previously, Newcomb has served as a US Department of Justice and SEC-sanctioned compliance monitor. During his US Embassy-sponsored visit to Indonesia, he has addressed an audience of law and university students at high-tech cultural center @america, explaining how the FCPA holds American companies liable if they engage in corruption overseas.
In meetings with the Ministry of Trade and the American Chamber of Commerce, Newcomb has explained that the Indonesian government can write anti-corruption provisions into bid proposals to ensure that companies investing in Indonesia have safeguards against corruption.
Throughout his visit, he will meet with law students, government officials and private companies to explain how the FCPA benefits Indonesia and creates a level playing field for companies worldwide.
