JAKARTA - The military (TNI) has stationed some of its personnel at Glodok China town in West Jakarta ahead of Jakarta gubernatorial election on Thursday.
"TNI personnel have been involved to secure vital objects including Glodok ahead of the election," Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command spokesman Senior Commissioner Rikwanto said here on Wednesday.
He said TNI has fielded 2,200 personnel to secure the vital objects and anticipate against possible security threats linked to ethnic or religious differences. He said the police had also mapped locations vulnerable to security threats or fire hazards.
In a "Mantap Praja Jaya" special operation since September 12 until the end of the election the Jakarta police has deployed 16,605 joint forces including from the regional military command to secure the runoff election.
Incumbent governor Fauzi Bowo with Nachrowi Ramli as his running mate (Foke-Nara) would compete with Joko Widodo and Basuki Tjahja Purnama (Jokowi-Ahok) in the election.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in a cabinet meeting on Tuesday expressed hope that the election would run well and peacefully so that it could become an example for the election in other regions.
Jokowi-Ahok won in the first round but the vote they collected was still below fifty percent forcing a run-off.
