JAKARTA - The Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) has become the fifth political party to register with the General Elections Commission (KPU) for participation in the 2014 general elections.
"Today, PDIP officially submitted all the documents required by the law to the KPU for verification. We need to show that we indeed have a presence at the provinces, districts, sub-districts and villages across the country," the party`s secretary general, Tjahjo Kumolo, stated during a press conference at the KPU office here on Tuesday.
He said PDIP was ready to take part in the 2014 general elections, adding that KPU was a self-reliant and professional general elections institution. "We are ready to participate in the 2014 general election, which is expected to be fair and honest, and we support KPU as the organizer of the elections," Tjahjo said.
When asked about PDIP's presidential candidate, he said the party had already selected a candidate but was waiting for the right time to make the information public.
"We have already submitted it to Megawati Soekarnoputri (the party`s general chairperson). We certainly have a candidate, but are awaiting the right time to make a public announcement," Tjahjo explained.
He admitted that the party was not yet completely ready for the legislative election. "We must prepare our legislative candidates. We need 2,738 candidates from the central and district levels," Tjahjo stated.
Starting August 10 through September 7, the KPU will register participants for the 2014 general elections and it will confirm their participation on December 15, 2012.
