MEULABOH, ACEH - Chief of Aceh Disaster Mitigation Agency Teuku Ahmad Dadek said West Aceh district needs more sirens for tsunami early warning system in the area.
"We have written a letter to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to give us four units of tsunami warning sirens," Dadek said here on Sunday. He added West Aceh also needs more loudspeakers to inform the local people of latest developments when an earthquake hit the area.
Dadek also expressed hope that the presence of cellphone operator in the area would help pass on tsunami warning information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to the people through automatic text messages.
On Wednesday (April 11), Aceh was rocked by 20 quakes, including two powerful quakes respectively measuring 8.3 and 8.1 on the Richter scale. The other temblors had a magnitude of 5.2 to 6.5.
The 8.3-magnitude quake rocked Simeulue at 3:38 p.m. and was centered about 180 nautical miles south of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, at a depth 10 km below sea level.
BMKG issued tsunami warnings to five provinces in the coastal areas of Sumatra island, covering Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu and Lampung on Wednesday.
Wednesday`s quake caused some Aceh residents to panic, while others evacuated to higher grounds or stayed inside tall buildings, such as Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh, one of the few structures that withstood the deadly tsunami in 2004.
