JAKARTA - Noted rights defenders in a Friday press release has called on the courts to release five Papuan activists from detention and dismiss all charges against them as they had done nothing more than voice their aspirations.
The five men are Selpius Bobii, a social media activist, August Sananay Kraar, a civil servant, Dominikus Sorabut, a filmmaker, Edison Waromi, a former political prisoner and Forkorus Yaboisembut, a Papuan tribal leader.
"These five men have been sentenced to three years in prison because of their statements made at the Papuan People’s Congress held in October last year," Human Rights Watch said in the press release.
Amnesty International, in similar tone, stated the imprisonment was a serious setback to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly in Indonesia. "These five activists are prisoners of conscience - jailed solely for peacefully expressing their political views. The activists must be immediately freed," Josef Benedict from the Amnesty International said in a statement.
The three-day congress was forcibly broken up by the police supported by soldiers. The police had deemed the congress treasonable due to a discussion of Papuan independence from Indonesia being held at the meeting. At least three people died as a result of the break up of the meeting and several others were shot and injured.
National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo said in defense of his subordinates that the actions of the local police had been in line with police operating procedures and thus violated no human rights.
