JAKARTA - A powerful earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on early Wednesday morning, seismologists said. There was no immediate word about damage or casualties from the region.
The 7.3-magnitude earthquake at 12.37 a.m. local time (1837 GMT Tuesday) was centered about 435 kilometers (270 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh on Sumatra. It struck about 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
