021-29918200: Air Asia malpractice LIPPO CIKARANG - It is a normal working day when I was called quite early in the morning, around eight, by the local number 021-29918200. I did not recognise that number, so I did not answer it. It often happens here that people dial the wrong number and then start asking all kinds of questions, even calling back to continue asking and making sure that I am not the one they are looking for.

I may be clear that I am not interestd in that, so people that want to call me and are not in my phone book, should SMS me first so I know I can expect a call. This Jakarta number however, kept on calling me over and over again and the fifth time I decided to pick up. Who knows it's something important like my bank, you never know, right?

I found out it was Air Asia Insure, the 'insurance branch' of the airliner Air Asia. At first I thought I was conned, because I did not see any reason why an airline would start selling insurance to me, as a foreigner in Indonesia. Well, that was made clear to me by a quickly talking female voice that explained how everything worked. Recently I purchased a ticket with Air Asia and had paid with my credit card.

So now it was time to hook me up with for free insurance by Air Asia Insure for the coming five days, no strings attached. Eeh.. no, I was not interested in that at all. I am already covered enough with the current insurance I have and I do not deem it necessary that I pay for another one after those five days of free trial insurance taken care of by the Indonesian insurer PT CIMB Sun Life, that most likely offered bad coverage seen the low fees offered to me.

Because I wanted to know how pushy they really are, I answered that I already had proper insurance and that there was no need for me to have additional ones. With a long story I was then brought back to the fact that this insurance was a good one, and free for a five day term as well. Stil not interested I tried to end the phone call politely.

The credit card used is not an Indonesian one and I myself are not an Indonesian person as well. I know that call centers normally like to drop the call because handing out credit cards to foreigners is very difficult in Indonesia. So no profit to be made here on me and the conversation is ended normally. Not this time, because the insurance was for all people in Indonesia. And once again the detour to the five days of free insurance.

Now I played my last card of the game. I earlier paid double for a ticket and have never received that 50 euro, while Air Asia has promised me to refund the double amount. That was five months ago. Calling again is of no use, the money is gone as is the reservation, which can not be found in the Air Asia systems anymore. Impossible, but with Air Asia it is no problem at all!

It went quiet for a moment. But then the blame game started. Did I fill out the website correctly? And that was the moment I got fed up. She could see that I used my credit card, so she could also see how many times I used it to purchase tickets. This never goes wrong, outside that one time. No you stupid, I didn't do anything wrong, because I received two different booking codes. Double, double as hell, that I did not did that by accident. I am not some lazy Indonesian who doesn't read and think everything will be okay at the end.

The conversation was then soon ended, because angry customers don't bring in money. Still one more effort was made to get me on those five free days of insurance. Unbelieveable! Of course I emphasised that I did NOT want to have those five days of free insurance, they could keep those for themselves. My thoughts run away; thinking that they might need any 'accident' insurande themselves if they kept on pushing like this. But you can't say such things obviously.

Six days later, a few days back, I had a number of missed calls. I was on the road and don't pick up the phone when driving. Traffic is dangerous enough on it's own and I don't need an accident. When I stopped I noticed it was the well-known number 0210-29918200, Air Asia Insure indeed. Maybe They still gave me those five free days and wanted to have an additional 'yes' to be able to withdraw money from my credit card right away.

When I arrived home I first checked to see if any withdrawal was made, but there wasn't (yet). That was a lucky one, because that was more than enough reason to file a police report of theft. Several years ago cybercrime laws have been toughened here as well, so I don't think someone wants to do something crazy being an Indonesian company. But you never know, that's why I checked.

The number of the call center can not be dialed. I tried that a couple of times but all I got was a busy signal after which the connection is closed. Mainly one-way traffic from Air Asia Insure, a very bad idea for a company that wants to sell additional products to their consumers. One reason more to stay away from it as far as possible.

So what do they offer? 750.000 rupiah per day with a maximum of 120 days a hear in hospitalization fees. Sounds nice, but a decent hospital with VIP-rooms (airconditioning and only one person a room) will set you back a million a day. You will have to satisfy yourself with a bed in a third class ward to have any money left to pay for the nurse that puts that needle in your ass.

Air Asia Insure, who can not be reached on 021-29918200, is mainly a fussy thing that is being pushed through if you are not awake and say 'no' to everything that is offered to you by their call center. A typical product that will trick many Indonesian credit card holders. Yes, they have insurance, but don't think they will be happy with it. They should think first before treating their customers this way.

Above all, if an Air Asia plane crashes you can also use the recently adopted Aviation Law to claim money for your treatment and you also have the right to damages. You don't need any insurance to get these facilities as they are law now. Of course you should not get killed in an accident, otherwise your relatives should make the claim for you.
