SEMARANG, CENTRAL JAVA - A total of 5,200 prisoners in Indonesia will get remissions on the occasion of Christmas Day. 162 of them will automatically become free men after receiving special remission II on Christmas this year. This according the director general of penitentiaries at the ministry of Law and Human Rights, Sihabudin, said here on Friday.
He said the announcement of the Christmas remissions was scheduled to be made at the Nusakambangan Penitentiary in Cilacap, Central Java, on Sunday (Dec 25).
He said remissions for prisoners involved in terrorism, corruption, narcotic drug cases and trans-national crimes meanwhile had been suspended following recent government decision to tighten extension of remissions for such convicts. "The suspension will remain until a new regulation is issued," he said.
He said a total of 251 prisoners in penitentiaries in Central Java would get special remission I and six special remission II that would set them free. The Indonesian government also extends remissions to prisoners on the occasion of Idul Fitri or the Islamic post-fasting holiday.
