BOGOR, WEST JAVA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono admitted here Friday that corruption and complicated bureaucratic procedures were still obstructing Indonesia`s economic growth.
Speaking at a service conference of top government officials at the Bogor Palace, the president said another problem hampering economic growth was inadequate infrastructure facilities.
Present at the government working meeting were also Vice President Boediono, all cabinet ministers, deputy ministers and the Bank Indonesia (central bank) governor.
"In the past, economic growth was constrained by unfavorable security conditions but now complicated bureaucratic procedures, corruption and inadequate infrastructure facilities are the stumbling blocks to economic growth," the president said.
According to the head of state, red tape hampering economic growth existed not only in central government offices but also in provincial government agencies.
"The bureaucracy is posing complicated problems but we have no other choice but to make serious efforts to fundamentally change this situation," the president said at the meeting to evaluate the government`s performance in 2011.
The President said , if the three problems he had mentioned were overcome comprehensively, he was optimistic that investment in the country would surge and thus drive the economy to reach a higher level of growth.
