LAMPUNG - Scientists at the observation post for the Mount Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra have announced that the number of tremors in the volcano has now increased to up to four or five a minute. During Wednesday, a total of 5,000 tremors were recorded.
Andi Suardi, one of the employees, said that there was no immediate danger of an eruption, although the alert status of the volcano was heightened last week, to a level three out of four. This is mainly to keep tourists and fishermen away from the volcano.
At this moment the volcano is not emitting lava. During the most recent eruption of the volcano late last year, the volcano produced a lava show. But the volcano is never really sleeping. Most of the time a small plume of smoke or ash is visible at the summit crater, even when the volcano is resting.
Suardi said that the large amount of tremors now created by the volcano was not a characteristic of the Mount Krakatau volcano. Further investigations about the cause of these tremors are ongoing.
Observing the Mount Krakatau volcano in certain cases can only be done to send someone to the island, as can be seen on this picture.
