JAKARTA - The Netherlands is responsible for the damage that survivors suffered during the killing spree on the village of Rawagede by Dutch soldiers during the Second World War. A court in The Hague confirmed that the Netherlands should pay damages to seven widows of victims.
Dutch soldiers entered the village of Rawagede on December 9, 1947 and killed hundreds of men there. According to the law, the case has expired already, but a judge set aside the five-year term of limitation. The severity of the case was decisive according to the judge. According the judge this is a period in Dutch history that has not been closed yet. Above all, there are still people alive that have witnessed this period.
The Netherlands has always said it was responsible for the killing spree in Rawagede. The government has already anticipated that damages would eventually be paid, said the judge, who also said that the Dutch government should not have just waited seen the severity of the actions. The government has said that it would study the verdict before answering on it.
Lawyer Liesbeth Zegveld, who represents the survivors, hopes that the Netherlands will not appeal in this case. "The Netherlands has the right to appeal, but if the government does that, many of the survivors will never see any damages and final acknowledgement," said Zegveld. "Most of them are already at the end of their lives, they are in their late 80's, early 90's. Just let them have some money in the last days of their life."
The damages that should be paid are destined for seven widows and one survivor. It is not known how much money will be paid. This will only become clear when the Netherlands will not appeal and the case is entirely closed. Only then lawyers will start filling in the claims.
