JAKARTA - Those who gave the orders for the murder of Indonesian human rights activist Munir in 2004 have to be prosecuted. Amnesty International writes an open letter to the Indonesian prosecutor to ask for a new investigation in the murder case.
Munir, his full name Munir Said Thalib, was murdered in September 2004 aged 38 during a flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam. He was poisoned with arsenic. Two persons have been tried and put behind bars over the murder, but according to Amnesty International, those who gave the orders are still free.
Pilot Pollycarpus Priyanto from the Indonesian airline Garuda Indonesia was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder in 2008 and a former executive of the airline has also been sentenced for his involvement in the murder. He would have falsified documents to enable the pilot to fly the same plane to Amsterdam as Munir.
Munir was a well-known human rights activist who investigated dozens of cases of activists that disappeared in the final days of the Suharto regime back in 1998. He also played a role in proving that the Indonesian military was involved in human rights violations in Aceh and East Timor.
Amnesty International now asks an independent investigation for the Munir murder case, in which high ranking people should also be prosecuted. Further more earlier cases and investigations should be reviewed in relation to intimidation of witnesses in the case.
A report from 2005 about a fact finding mission about Munir's death should be made public as well, according to Amnesty International. The country should make sure that no human rights are violated anymore.
