FLORES - The Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency BMKG has announced that it has raised the alert status for the Anak Ranakah volcano in the district of Manggarai on the island of Flores in southeastern Indonesia. The status is now two out of scale of four. The 2,247 meter high volcano almost continuously emits a small plume of white smoke, but now the activity inside the volcano has also increased.
The volcano, in fact more a lava dome, is the most recently formed lava dome in the Pocok Leok caldera of the Mount Ranakah volcano. This lava dome was formed late December 1987. On January 11, 1988 the volcano erupted from this newly formed lava dome with power for the last time. At that time, the ash cloud reached heights up to eight kilometer. The volcano also produced hot pyroclastic flows.
Very little is known about the volcano because the first known eruption was that of 1988. Ever since the volcano has not produced an eruption anymore. Measurements done on the slopes of the volcano however show that the number of tremors is increasing. These tremors can not be felt by humans, but based on this information it was decided to raise the alert status of the volcano to two, especially because the lava dome is very fragile.
The volcano is currently monitored closely. The population in the area are asked to remain alert whenever they are near the volcano. Local and regional disaster mitigation agencies will review the situation to decide if extra precautions should be taken any time soon. Visitors to the volcano are not allowed to climb to the area in the direct surroundings of Anak Ranakah as well.
